There are many reasons why the cheerleaders didn't show up, but I'm sure hitting the books isn't one of them. Let's be honest here.

Here's your answer from SMU Spirit Coordinator Zac Brannon:
Our students are currently in finals. It is the rule of our division that we are not allowed to require students to attend events after classes are out. It is in our interest and the students that school be their main focus and priority.

Sounds reasonable to me, it is this way every year....
Perhaps we could have an Alumni Dance Squad just like the band

Wow, relax people...
I've always felt the game day presentation at Moody was amateur hour, regardless of which band is playing or which spirit group shows up. We are not showing Top 25 basketball presentation anywhere in Moody.

That's AWESOME! Have you let him pull the old trifecta yet? On another note, your email was clearly well-intentioned. But wouldn't it be better for SMU to aspire to BE a top 25 program?
I'll address the 2nd question, but not the 1st. Yes, but the the thing is, you don't wait to be a top 25 program to act like one. That is precisely what Orsini has been preaching. You don't do things half-arsed, bush league, and amateur, just because you aren't yet top 25. When you adopt the attitude and start acting good and like every game matters, then that starts to sink in and it happens. Think back to when Cuban first bought the Mavericks, when people were still criticizing Nelson for drafting unproven, unknown Euro projects like guys named Nowitski. Even before they started winning, Cuban did things to make people think the Mavs were a big time, classy organization, and it became THE place to be even BEFORE they started winning. If people really think about it, the then-nascent Mavs scene didn't just come after they started winning. This amazed me, but then Cuban came from a college basketball background at Indiana.
I totally agree with you. The analogy with Cuban was perfect. He made players want to be here. As far as the first question is concerned; it shouldn't have even been asked.

I guess the team could be forgiven then if they didn't show up. Had to study for finals you know.

It was a joke in response to the one she made, so get over it pops. Nice use of punctuation, math major.

The KEY language in that response by the "authorities" is that they cannot "reguire" students to show up! What the %$#@&& keeps the students, i.e. cheerleaders from just going to the game on their own and acting like cheerleaders???
Absurd ..no cheerleaders at a game. I doubt you would find this eat A&M, Texas or such!

The only legitimate reason those cheerleaders would have to not be there would be if they were on a treadmill somewhere. What has happened to our cheerleaders??? They look so....so......umpa lumpa ish.

I am in a unique position to have strong opinions on both of these subjects.
First, as a former coordinator of the Celebration of Lights, I was not pleased to see a basketball game scheduled at the same, or nearly the same, time. It's always on the second Sunday after Thanksgiving. That scheduling is not acceptable. The Lady Mustangs played at 2:00, which was fine. 7:00 was too close to the Celebration of Lights.
As far as the spirit squads not at games - totally unexcusable. They may not be REQUIRED to be there, but they should WANT to be there. As a former mascot, I only missed one home game in 2 1/2 years because I couldn't take a test early on a rare Thursday night SWC game - and I still made it to Moody in the 2nd half. During the holiday break, there were always local cheerleaders and pom squad members at the games - maybe only 4-5 of us total, but we were there, along with the Mustang Band I should add.
I know I didn't want to miss one game because I was proud to support the Mustangs.

Here is a cookie...don't schedule games during reading days and finals week...hit the road where you won't have any fans anyway and make getting fans to the game someone else's problem. Just how it is until we make our first sweet sixteen run with DOH

This is funny. There's always gonna be conflicts. Make a decision. You can't do it all.

The point that everyone should take from this is that the "genius" who decided to have Moody's 50th birthday party on the eve of finals, at the same time as the celebration of lights, and against a NAIA opponent should be removed from the front office and given a broom to sweep the gym.
This could have been a big deal and a fun event if it was sometime during the spring semester, maybe during the UTEP game, which should be well attended.
