I expect it's a little of both.
$1.8 is a lot of scratch -- hard to turn down.
All the posturing by UK officials sounded like a kiss of death.
How long until John Calipari's name is circulated as a candidate? ESPN's Andy Katz says Michigan State's Tom Izzo, Crean (Marquette) and Few (Gonzaga) likely will be on the short list.

According to folks up here, Tubby got an ultimatum fromt the AD to fire several of his staff, and Tubby wouldn't do it. So, this was turning into a power struggle. Tubby made the decision to cut out while the getting was good. Smart decision on his part.
