SMU Basketball Charity - "Nothing but Nets"

Postby PonySoprano » Fri Jan 18, 2008 8:52 am

I had an opportunity to talk to Coach Doherty this week and he told me about a charity drive that the basketball team is taking part in with Highland Park UMC.

HPUMC and the SMU Mustang basketball team are partnering in a mission program called Nothing But Nets to help stamp out Malaria in Africa.

The solution is a simple and cost-effective way to prevent malaria deaths. For just $10, you can purchase a bed net and have it delivered and installed in homes where malaria is rampant. This will create a barrier against the mosquitoes that carry malaria.

During January-March SMU home games, fans can pledge a dollar amount towards Nothing But Nets based on SMU performance – i.e. a particular dollar amount for every three-pointer made during conference play.

There will be more information about Nothing But Nets in the concourse of Moody Coliseum.

More info can also be found here:

Kudos to Coach Doherty and the Men's Basketball team. Coach also mentioned that the team is planning to take a visit to Africa this summer as well.

I believe the visit to Africa has something to do with spreading basketball, though

This sounds like a great cause. I'll probably donate one way or another. Regarding the pledge per 3ptr made, though, wouldn't the charity be better off if one could pledge toward every 3pt shot made by an opponent? The Houston game alone could've made a huge dent in Malaria.

Nothing but Nets is a sound group that does a lot of good. I know Laura Bush championed DDT but really, there are newer insecticides that are about as effective and don't have all the bad effects that DDT does...don't really know why the DDT push is coming back up, I guess b/c of Laura

By the way, the Bill and Melissa Gates Foundation is matching donations to Nothing but Nets on a dollar-for-dollar basis.

Sorry, I was thinking about the "foundation" he set up for his mistress Melissa.
