Scholarship

Postby PonySnob » Wed Jan 09, 2008 10:31 pm

When a recruit gets a basketball or football scholarship, is it a guarantee that SMU will foot the bill for 4-5 years or are they for one year with the understanding that they will be renewed annually - i.e if a player is clearly not "panning out" can the coach just take away the 'ship like what TCU did routinely when Billy Tubbs was their coach?

Bingo.

Most coaches won't pull a scholarship because a guy doesn't pan out, because HS coaches hold grudges and will remember the next time that college coach comes to recruit one of that HS coach's players. If the kid breaks rules (or the law) or struggles academically or something, it's easy to pull the scholarship. Coaches also can quietly encourage a player to transfer (i.e. "you're never going to play here, but I can make some calls to friends in the coaching industry on your behalf..."). But in most cases, a player who doesn't develop is chalked up to the "win some, lose some" idea.

bump...

with the 4 signees last fall and the Faye transfer, looks like there would be 14 returnees...so somebody doesn't get invited back.

With all the talk about possibly recruiting a JUCO PG, could be 2 guys aren't going to continue their bball careers at SMU?
