What John Calipari and Matt Doherty have in common

Both made horrific mistakes in the final seconds by not calling timeouts to get their teams organized about what they needed to do.

We blew the Tulsa game here on a layup with 0.3 seconds to go. After 2 Derrick Roberts free throws with 6.1 seconds to play, Matt Doherty chose not to call timeout to get his team settled an organized. Huge defensive lapse led to the pretty easy FG. I posted about that snafu after that game that night.

Calipari didn't do it when Derek Rose hits the second of two to put Memphis up 63-60 with 10.8 seconds to play. The Tigers pay for it by giving up a 3 and then collapsing in OT.

These are kids. Their emotions are all over the place. They probably aren't thinking clearly. Calipari said he wanted his kids to foul KU. OK, fine. Then call a timeout and make sure they know that. Leave nothing to chance.

Great debate between Digger Phelps, Bob Knight, Jay Bilas and [deleted] Vitale on this last night. Phelps was the only one advocating that the repetition in practice should have made it commonplace for everyone. The others disagreed.

Call it a collapse by Memphis or a great comeback by Kansas. But it was a fun game.

No debate that involves [deleted] Vitale is a "great debate." That clown was a hack coach who bullied his way into the Hall of Fame by screaming for 30 years and engaging in some kind of uncomfortably affectionate relationship with Coach K, Roy Williams, Gary Boeheim and of course, Bob Knight. He belongs in the Hall about as much as I do.

That's a gross misinterpretation. I have the right to question my coaches on game strategy. And you've done it too. So don't go off on some holier than thou stance. That's crap. I like Matt and I think he'll do a great job here. Stop the damn whining.

I don't care about Vitale's Hall of Fame thing. I don't know why you're bringing that up. It was worth discussing.

I find this so amusing I've been accused of being a cheerleader to the nth degree.

It's a hands-off policy on our coaches? We can't disagree with something they have done. I'm pointing out the similarity of these situations. If you want to call it me going after Doherty, then that's up to you.

What is the matter with some of our fans? It's a fair criticism. Do some of you enjoy being big puss bags?

I was thinking the same thing about how eerily similar those games were. And weren't we up three on UTEP at home when we didn't foul only to have them make a miracle three pointer to tie it at the buzzer?

Hopefully, last night shows the correct way to play that situation. Take you timeout to slow down, setup and reiterate that you will foul and then foul.

The play that really killed Memphis though was the inbounds steal that turned into a three. If they get the ball in there, it was over.

I really don't think Calipari and Doherty had anything in common this season. Calipari put together one helluva team and had a great season. If Doherty can someday generate half of the excitement, talent or success at SMU that Calipari has at Memphis I will be happy.

Sounds familiar. I just wish he had done that against Tulsa. Can't do anything about it now but learn to try it this way the next time we are in that position.
