Men's basketball non-conference schedule announced

First of all, unless you know the specifics of our game agreements, there's no guarantee of a return game from any of our road non-conference opponents this year. Don't just assume A&M or anyone else is coming to Moody next year unless it's been verified.

Second, this is a pitiful home non-conference schedule. Absolutely pitiful. I know this is designed to get the program some wins, but I don't want to hear ANY whining from Doherty or Orsini about lack of fan support. You put together a home schedule like this, you should expect to take your lumps, i.e. a mostly empty Moody.

Of course, whiners will say, "You should support SMU no matter who they're playing." Sorry, that doesn't fly in a market dominated by professional sports. You can't expect people to support a program with zero cred that doesn't even attempt to bring in name opponents. Not in an area with plenty of other entertainment options, including some great high school basketball.

When SMU basketball starts showing some potential, like being competitive in C-USA, or starts bringing in some legit top-rated recruits, then you can expect fans to support the team against lowest-tier competition. If a weak schedule like this helps SMU get better in the long run, that's great. But in the meantime, don't expect more from the fans than you expect from your team.

No problem with the schedule. Going to buy season tickets and make it into town to as many games as possible. Doesn't matter to me who they are playing. When we get really competitive, it will matter.

If doh is such a big time coach, then why can't he get one big name in here for a non-conference game. This is his 3rd season here; do we really have to wait 3 more years for him to turn it around? If it takes him 6 years for basketball, then shouldn't Jone Junes get 12 years?

Who says he wants to bring in big names to play us right now? He brought in cupcakes by design to fit in with his plan (whatever it may be), which includes winning a certain percentage of non-conference games in order to get the payout from CUSA.

Next season with 2 Seniors and 5 Juniors I am inclined to think we will have a stronger non-conference schedule. I'm also inclined to think SMU will see post-season play that season if we keep our current roster in tact.

I agree. I also hope that next year we do the away part of several home and homes with bigtime schools, so that we have them coming to our place wihen we have 5 seniors and this year's class is Juniors.

For any mid major to get a major to do a home and home is tough. Our only fortune is that we are in a major city. Thus some major schools that want to recruit in DFW so that OU, Baylor, UT and A&M don't grab all the good players might come here. But Dallas still isn't LA, Chicago, NYC, Philly or DC. Those are where the studs are in great volumes. That is why DePaul is in the BE along with Georgetown, Villanova, and St. Johns. That gives schools like Syracuse, WV, Pitt and dare I say it, ND some exposure in those markets. I suspect Doherty will get a series with UNC whenever he wants to. I suspect Orsini can get a series with ND down the road. I think they just don't want to use those chits until we have a team that could be competitive and use their RPI.

Doherty is turning it around-one prospect at a time-Programs aren't turned around with Coaching Genuis or magic pixie dust as is a popular theory on this board. They are tuned around with improved recruiting. Recruit 3+ strong classes and Count to 4 starting with the first strong class. And Walla Magic. The Count has begun. He needs to seal the deal with another quality recruiting class.

This isn't football. Big time basketball programs play non-conference away games all the time. We have hosted Tech, OU, Ok. St., Tennessee, Wake Forest and others in recent years. Doherty could have had someone better on this schedule too if he wanted to.
