C-USA Freshman of the Year — from SMU

Postby PonyTales » Thu Sep 18, 2008 10:22 pm

From everything I've heard, Christine Elliott not only is holding her own in pickup games, she's dominating them. Every single time.

I'll call it now: Christine Elliott is this year's C-USA Freshman of the Year.

I've heard the same thing about her - hope it's true.

I'll be in Moody for most of the home games this year, and I'm going over to Frogtown to watch the Ponies run over those overrated Lizards, too.

Anyone seen this kid play? How does she compare (other than experience, of course) to Janielle Dodds?

I've seen her. Dominate is a bit of an exaggeration, she's playing well. She's a strong girl who finishes well around the basket, and gets up and down the court fairly well, and she'll improve as she gets in better shape. There's no comparison with Janielle, she's a different kind of player. Strong and more physical than Janielle was, but lacking the offensive skill set that Nellie had. She goes up strong with the basketball, but needs to develop more moves in the low post. and she needs to practice against taller people, right now our other posts have minor injuries, and werent playing pickup. Christine will start this year, and contribute right away, I could see her averaging 10 points and 7 rebounds a game this year, and improving steadily as she matures.

The player dominating the pickup games I've seen is Jillian Samuels. JB couldn't miss a shot if she was blindfolded. Thursday while I was watching she went 14/14, most from behind the arc. If she shoots like that during the season she'll break her own records from last year. Delisha Wills is also playing like a star, she should have a very good year. Jillian, Delisha, Christine and Brittany Gilliam give the team a good nucleus to build around, I'll be interested to see who the 5th starter is.

Did you chart shots at a pickup game?

Jillian Samuels is the best three-point shooter in Conference USA, and it might not be close. Set a single-season school record last year with 72, and is more than halfway to the career record after two seasons. If she stays healthy, I'll be stunned if she doesn't break the record - maybe by a lot.

Was it two years ago or three years ago that a poor East Carolina team came in to Moody and won because they had a big beast inside who not only took up space, but also got points and boards in the paint? Shoved Dodds and the others around because they were too big and strong?

Hope that's the kind of player Elliott becomes!

Yeah. So?
I just wish I had time to do the same!

I remember that ECU team. As great as Dodds was (is!), there was nothing she could do with that big kid in the middle — just not strong enough.

Keep hitting the weight room, Christine, and tear it up in the paint!

It's unfair to expect a repeat of an NCAA bid after losing such an awesome senior class, but I'm really interested to see what Samuels, Wills and Gilliam can do now that they're the go-to players.
