Back from the game - a bit of a nail-biter. SMU jumped to an 18 point lead in the second half but Tulsa went on a 13-0 run to close it to 5. Credit the team for hanging in there and hitting some key baskets when they needed to. I thought Haley Day and Jillian Samuals had two huge, key baskets down the stretch. I'll continue to say that the Elliott kid is an unbelievable talent. She made some nice post moves today and this team is exceptionally good when she's involved in the offense.

Nice win - 1-0 conference start. Beat Marshall!

Fantastic! I hate those [deleted] from Tulsa.

What a great start to conference play for the Mustangs!

Im a big fan of Elliott and Day. Even bigger fan of what the Stangs are doing...making a concerted effort to start off inside...and let that open up their outside game.

Inside out...cant say it enough. Easiest 3 pointer in bball comes inside out. Look at the shooters stats since they've focused on establishing Elliott 1st. Numbers dont lie.

Now if we can just hope Gilliam made a new years resolution to make better decisions...this team could be really good in conference.

I totally agree with what you're saying. Christine Elliott is getting better and better and better. The refs took her out of the Frog game. When she's on the floor, though, I have yet to see anyone who can really handle her.

Haley Day has the prettiest shot on the team — she needs to shoot more. She's like Elliott — you can see the confidence growing as she hits more and more shots.

I saw on the SMU site that Tulsa — which beat us twice last year — lost nobody from last year's roster, while we lost six players. Our newcomers are very promising, but they're young and therefore inconsistent. The win yesterday smacks of fantastic coaching.

Here's the DMN writeup.

Women's basketball: SMU 67, Tulsa 56
01:49 AM CST on Sunday, January 4, 2009

At University Park, junior guard Jillian Samuels made three 3-pointers and scored a game-high 17 points as SMU won its Conference USA opener at Moody Coliseum.

Freshman center Christine Elliott scored 14 points for the Mustangs, while sophomore Haley Day had 13 and Brittany Gilliam 11.

Samuels and Day also nailed three 3-pointers as the Mustangs (8-6) won their fourth straight and six of seven.

The Mustangs lost both regular-season matchups against Tulsa last season, but raced to a 27-12 lead in the first half.
