Don't know the exact number but UAB is down to 6-7 scholarship players.

I missed the beginning but imagine Harp was in for defense; did we open in man defense with Harp on Vaden? Strategy may have been to keep Vaden from opening the game with a run of three's? That's happened a few times for UAB/Vaden in Birmingham this year.

Coach knows Harp isn't a scorer, at least not yet. He's in there for defense, hustle plays, etc. Lot of teams need those guys, and Harp's pretty good at those things.

its fine to have hustle and energy players but it cant be at the shooting gaurd position, espicaly on a team with no true scorer and that struggles to score points most of the time.

Otis is our hustle/energy guy

Harp's other half ?

Ryan Harp

Since he's been the subject of multiple threads these past two seasons I just looked back to scout Ryan's info and noticed the various stats below. I like this guy but it's right to say that he's not demonstrating all of his abilities at the moment. He gives the team a second intangibles give like Otis- Harp with the " A. C. Green " style and the " Charles Barkley" work, minus the scoring. Right now they are both utility players filling needs on the team . What I'm wondering is where is the scoring and assists that Harp provided in High School ? I wonder if he worked himself into the doghouse or if he's such a team player that he's deferring in the name of team development. If the latter is it - he needs a medal soon. If not then what ? I played ball in HS -going from the small town to the big city in the middle of high school and it was a shock at first. But if you can lead a team in scoring and be the go to guy in the minor leagues you should be able to make the adjustment and get back to form in a years time.
Isn't that the consensus disappointment on him on the boards ? Coming in as a multi- threat option and delivering less ?
I think he can score , just not sure what's up with him.

I posted the stats to ref. his info, but also to find out if anyone can post
some video or a the link to video on his Sophmore game vs Abilene High School (40-39) that game. I'd be interested in seeing 20 minutes of him in action then -to compare vs now.

If that's been posted before pls send me in the right direction.

As for the game -
I think any leash McCoy might have been own may have been snapped.

I think that T/O's are still a huge factor for the team as a whole.

Where were the assists ?

I'm beginning to like Mike.Walker.

Last thought - In an admittedly simplified " what if " scenario. If you take the avg. minutes a player has played for the season and extend those stats for a full 40 mins -Papa's game isn't as surprising as at first glance. And several other players numbers look like "starter" numbers too.
For Papa, I think it has been the maturity issue that has been mentioned a few times here before.

I'm no Harp apologist but I think he also had a pretty good AAU career here in Dallas...maybe just an inability to create own shots in a quick college game

Or maybe Coach Doh has told him not to shoot?

From my understanding of the situation, the kid is just too plain scared to shoot. What I heard about him coming out of his school was that he was deadly from beyond the arc. Nothing has shown me he can hit a three, much less a lay up. He has no confidence period.

A mental thing ?
David Noel is one of my favorite players from when MD coached at UNC.
Per one of the fansites I read at the time , Noel was having a problem with his confidence level and didn't think he could play at the top of or at the D1 levels. Coach was having a hard time getting he to believe in himself after his soph year. Apparently the encouragement took and Noel is a personal favorite of mine because he eventually overcame his confidence problems and developed into a good 6th man and regular contributor to the team.

What could make a kid scoring so well in HS become a basket case in College? Could be the pressure to succeed from outside the court. Grades, family , etc. ... I really hope that this isn't the case with him... his may be one of the additional boats we have extra next year.

From what I've heard, Doh has been working with him on his shot and in the meantime he for the most part has the red light in games. So I'd say that's a good reason to have a lack of confidence when the coach gives you the red light. Who knows, maybe it'll pay off down the road, but hindering a guy who was a decent shooter last season certainly isn't helping this season.

Red, Green, and Yellow - I remember those well. It's a mantra in BB.
That info makes a difference tho thanks.

How is it possible to have any player on the floor with a red light and told not to shoot, let alone a SHOOTING GAURD!!!!!! No wonder we struggle to score 60 ppg most of the time. Its like playing with 4 players on the offensive end.

I'd rather play with 4 on the offensive end than with 0 on the defensive. We play a zone and somehow we give up a ton of lay-ups and dunks.
