Can we finish strong?

Postby Silk » Wed Feb 18, 2009 10:52 am

Ponies go to Houston this week to face UH and Rice, who we swept at Moody Coliseum. My concern is that UH is very athletic and it took a last-second Brittany Gilliam 3 to win that, and Rice is a hell of a lot better than its crappy record.

Honestly, I expect to split the games, and I'm thinking of driving down.

They are 4-2 on the road with these last road games coming up. Pretty good stuff considering life on the road in conference play is never easy.

The goal is to get one of the top 4 seeds before the CUSA tournament and see what happens after that. I want them to win the regular season title but more importantly, I want them to get a bye.

We are arguably the most talented team in the conference. Sometimes we play silly basketball, but I'd like our chances in another meeting with So. Miss, Marshall or UCF.

that's what I get for not reading the first post in the thread referencing Gilliam. My fault for inattentiveness.

For a second I thought you were referencing not the fighting Rhondas but the our guys played hard and put themselves in a position to compete for a win Dohs.

Well, I understand. It's hard to keep track of the men's success on the road this year. :P

I would have thought "...we swept at Moody..." would have given it away.

I flew to the Southern Miss and UCF games, among a handful of others, and from what I've seen (all told I've been to about 18-19 games this year), we are not the most talented team in the conference. UCF is, and it might not be close. We can win the tournament, but depending on the matchup, we can get beaten in the first game, too. I'd say SMU, UCF, Southern Miss, Marshall, UTEP, ECU and maybe Tulane have a chance to win the thing.

I'd say UCF is the most talented team SMU has faced this year outside of Texas A&M.

I think we'll finish the season out with a 3-1 record. Gives us a 12-4 record overall, which by the looks of it is good for 1st, 2nd or 3rd. If the team plays the aggressive defense they played against UAB, they could easily go 4-0 though. Marshall and UCF play on the road tomorrow - might be the one time I'm pulling for Tulane and UTEP.

We played great defense against UAB, but it's different against Houston — against UAB, we had to shut down a stud guard and an excellent perimeter shooter. Houston's center did her best Shaq impression against us, and has played well ever since. We still have to defend the three-point line, but Severin and Elliott and now Brandenburg have to keep her in check. We don't have to shut her out, but we've got to keep her from putting up 20, or whatever she had against us last time. UH traditionally is better at home, and we need to keep her from going off.
