Our inventory list shows three reels for the game so it will take us a few days to get it transferred. If his daughter will email me his address I will send it to him. mrydel email me your address.

I don't remember what the crowd was for that Nebraska game, but probably 7k plus for an early non-conference game. I just remember the student section being packed and very lively (just before exams?)

Looking back at the "stats" from that year, it was Gene Phillips' SR year. Phillips averaged 28.3, hit almost 85% on his FTs. Gene could really shoot. How scary would he have been with a 3 pt line? Larry Delzell and Bobby Rollins could light it up as well.

We averaged 5234 attendance for non-conference games which included Austin College, Dallas Baptist, McMurray and Okla City. We averaged 7109 for SWC games

That was Korver's Soph year. Team came back the next season and won a share of the SWC title. Lost an OT thriller to Texas (played in Waco) so we didn't get to play in the post season.

Those were fun years. I remember playing pick up games at Moody with Rick Billik, Zach Theil, Mike Hanks and Rusty Bourquein. Anyone ever hear from those guys?

Great to hear about the Moody stories. I would have loved to see Phillips play. I remember seeing all his records in Moddy and was always impressed. Also, Mr. Korver sounds like a great Mustang bballer too.

I was lucky enough to see Moody full during the Koncak era so at least I know what it can be.

It's been a while since I've crossed paths with any of them, but Rick practiced law in DC, then moved back to Chicago to joins his dad's law firm, Rusty was in business with Lynn Phillips, and Mike got his master's at IU as an assistant to Bobby Knight, and was coaching in college.

However, that's old info on all of them.

Thanks. I knew Rick was practicing law; Actually I think he was a Judge back home in IL last I had heard. I knew Mike was head coach at South Alabama several years ago, but I have no idea whether he is still coaching.

played in many a pick up game in the old women's gym as well, but the guys who played for SMU preferred Moody to work on half court game. I miss the old student days. Somewhere amid all the play time, we actually found time to study and attend classes.

My dad sure does light up when you start talking to him about his days at SMU.

I'll definitely be in touch regarding the Nebraska video, thanks for the offer Charlestonpony, but I'll be more than happy to pay for that game tape. He gets so animated when he's talking about that game. I've seen him in numerous scuffles during pick-up games, and if he specifically mentions a fight, its worth seeking out the story, even more so the video.

He went to a reunion a year or two ago for the SWCC team (I think!)...he touches base with a lot of the old players, he mentioned to me that Jack Trout had his ring stolen at some point, so he had a new one made and sent to him.

He also talks quite a bit about pick-up games at SMU (he met my mom there, so I get stories from both sides), and from the sound of it they got pretty rough. He said one time 4 guys jumped him at center court after he put the friend on the ground blocking a layup...and he was the only one who walked away.

He also said he couldn't do a left-handed layup when he showed up at SMU.

Amazing how fast you could work up a sweat in the old women's gym on a warm day. I too recall fondly those pick up games with many of the varsity guys playing game after game with the rest of us just trying not to totally embarrass our selves. Throw in Coach McMillion and Coach Hook as regulars and once in a while Coach Pruitt and the games really got interesting. Clean trash talking if you will.

for the record...I was not one of those who jumped Clayton...and I never called a foul during one of those pick up games. That was a fun, rickety old gym but once the outdoor pool was built, the women's gym's fate was sealed. Had to clean up the neighborhood.

I think he said it was a group of 5 guys that came from a rival area. No one that he had known. He said he was going for eyeballs and groins, trying to stay on his feet...until the last guy left on his feet turned and ran away.
