Gilliam's Shooting, Elliott's Double-Double Lead SMU Into C-USA Semifinal
Mustangs crack 20-wins plateau for seventh time

March 6, 2009

NEW ORLEANS, La. (SMU) - Junior guard Brittany Gilliam hit six three-pointers en route to a career-high 28 points, and freshman center Christine Elliott had her fifth double-double, as the SMU women's basketball team pulled away from East Carolina, 77-69, in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Championship Friday afternoon at Tulane's Fogelman Arena in New Orleans.

With the win, the Mustangs' record improves 20-10 - marking the seventh time in program history they have won 20 or more games in a season.

The Mustangs now advance to face UCF in the C-USA semifinal. The semifinal will tip off at 2 p.m. Saturday and can be heard live on KAAM (770 AM) or seen live on CBS College.

Gilliam's six three-pointers - on just nine attempts from behind the arc - were a new personal high and fell just one short of Andrea Cossey's single-game school record, set in 2004 when she nailed seven shots from behind the line in an SMU victory over Hawaii.

Elliott scored 13 points and added a game-high 16 rebounds - her fifth double-double also was her third in as many games. Over the last two regular-season games and Friday's win over the Pirates, Elliott is averaging 16 rebounds per game.

The game, which was played before a crowd of 1,354, was decided at the free throw round and on the glass.

Neither team shot particularly well from the charity stripe - SMU hit 63.6 percent of its foul shots, while the Pirates hit 66.7 percent of theirs - but the Ponies had more opportunities. SMU hit 21-of-33 shots from the line, while ECU hit 10 of 15.

Meanwhile, the Ponies turned in a record performance on the glass. SMU collected a season-high 52 rebounds, improving on the previous high of 51 set in the Ponies' Nov. 28 win over Sam Houston State. The Mustangs' 52 rebounds tied for the sixth-highest single-game team total, and their 26 offensive rebounds tied for the second-highest single-game team total in C-USA Championship history. Individually, Elliott's 16 rebounds tied for the sixth-highest individual total in C-USA Championship history, and her eight offensive boards tied for the second-highest individual mark.

In addition to her game-high 28 points, Gilliam also tied for the team lead with three assists, and had a game-high four steals.
