He also has the perfect storm. A not very tough academic school with a long history of basketball success which was initially (when he took over) in old CUSA with Marquette, Louisville, DePaul, Cincy, UAB, UH. So he had a lot to sell initially, then when Marquette, DePaul, Cincy and Louisville left, he had the horses to make deep runs. Great coach and recruiter, but I am not sure if any coach could have success at a school like U Mass and then Memphis and be successful at SMU. I would have thought that Matt Doherty could succeed here (since UNC and ND have more rigorous standards) , and so far he hasn't.
That is a big key, it is an elite program without the "stuffiness" of the ACC. Memphis is an appealing city to many young athletes, offers a top program with much success and relaxed academics. That is why Memphis can recruit as good as anybody in the country. I have no doubt that in the last 3 years, they would have been at or near the top of every major conference. Class of 89
Last I checked the CUSA site still said women's was TBD. Is it confirmed for Tulsa now?
