Home court advantage

Postby Charleston Pony » Sun Feb 09, 2003 1:15 am

Well, if we can't draw large crowds to support our team, it's nioce to have the home court officiating advantage. We shot 30 FTs to Hawaii's 11, making 26 to their 7. That's pretty much the difference in this one. This SMU team (hitting 26-30 for 87% tonight) is one of the better FT shooting teams in recent history. I'll have to research what the best team FT percentage was all-time. These guys have had some great games from the line.

Good win, guys. Good luck on the upcoming road trip. If we can steal one of these next two, then you can start talking about this team being a contender for the WAC title.

After tonight's game, this team is hitting 72% of their FTs for the season. The '61-'62 squad shot 76.9% and holds the team season record. These guys may not threaten that record, but having confidence from the line will be huge if they are going to pull out some close games down the stretch.

I like the fact that Kris Lowe stepped up and contributed tonight. We need to have at least 7-8 guys who can score double figures (or close to it) on any given night if we're going to be a factor in WAC Tourney play. We've got 4 guys averaging double figures, so we really need Isham, Lowe and somebody else to contribute (Kelley? Voc?)

Great win, we live for another day and I really didn't think they would be able to pull it off. If they split the upcoming road trip then I will become a true believer and eat all the crow anyone cares to serve me.

Observation: We obviously could use more outside shooting and a real consistent threat for the 3. Does anyone else think Brian Miller should be given more minutes with some set screens for the 3 and a green light to shoot. It's totally worthless to put him in the game with 2 min. left when we are behind and expect greatness. Thats how the Fresno and Boise games ended.

Miller is careless with the ball at times. Hopkins is really growing into his role as a passer; he had 8 assists to 4 TO's tonight. I was excited to see Lowe come off the bench and nail 3 of 3 treys and hit all 4 free throws. Great defense for the first time this year. SOLID GAME! GO MUSTANGS!

Okay, I have to say it...

Why is it that everybody on this board was monitoring Voc's surgery, rehab, etc. but nobody was giving any attention to Brian Miller's surgery/rehab?

Why do i bring this rather odd question up?

Because I don't think it's very fair that a very talented individual like Brian Miller is consistently bashed like he is on this board. Obviously, the ultimate decider (is that a word?) is performance. What bugs me is that a lot of people were willing to put all of Voc's struggles on his comeback from a serious injury. And perhaps rightfully so...I think PX said it best when he said that we all just assume that people automatically heal from serious injuries. But often times, people do not!

Yet, for all the support Voc got, I have not seen one single post defending Miller despite the fact that the kid is coming back from a BACK injury!!

Again, just a point to consider...

I'm just curious why he's not shown the same support/given the same benefit of the doubt...

This guy is a good person.

And no, I'm not saying anybody was bashing Miller in this particular thread.

I just don't have the time nor inclination to hunt up some old post bashing Miller.

Good point about the injury. I like the fact that Dement has stoped most of his wild substitution in the last few games, but I just think if you have this kid who was a great shooter in high school, then we need to give him some minutes and some screens and picks to give him open shots. Shooting is streaky, and you can't give someone the burden of either hitting 100% or hit the bench.

I finally got to se the Ponies on TV last night. Exciting game. There is a lot of talent on the SMU team. Speed and quickness was a huge difference in the teams.

I think we could use some strong play form the post position. A consistent big man play in the paint would open up more opportunities for Ross.

Great win and I hope the Stangs carry the big Mo with them on the upcoming road trip.
