SMU Women's Basketball Wins Exhibition 74-47 Over Abilene Christian

Nov. 9, 2009

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's basketball team led for all 40 minutes in its only exhibition game of the 2009-10 season, defeating Abilene Christian, 74-47, Monday night at Moody Coliseum.

The Mustangs opened the game on an 11-0 run in the first 4:03 minutes of play. Christine Elliott led the effort for SMU, getting three of the team's four steals in that stretch.

After Abilene Christian made a bit of a push to get the game back to 18-11, Elliott led another charge, this time at the offensive end, as she scored 11 first half points, helping the Mustangs to close the half on a 35-15 run, for a 53-26 lead at intermission.

The second half started slowly for the Mustangs, as the team didn't get on the scoreboard until 15:19 remaining in the period. The half was played pretty evenly, with both teams scoring 21 points apiece in the second 20 minutes.

The Mustangs spread the ball offensively as nine of 11 players scored at least four points. Elliott finished the game as the high-point scorer on the night, totaling 13 points and seven rebounds in 19 minutes of action.

Defensively SMU locked down the Wildcats, holding the opposition to just 25.9% shooting on 15-58 shot attempts. Turnovers also helped the home team's cause as the Mustangs turned 24 ACU turnovers into 20 points.

SMU will open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 13 at 5:30 p.m. against Loyola Marymount at Moody Coliseum. The game will be the first of a doubleheader for SMU fans as the men's team will take on South Florida at approximately 7:45 p.m. Fans who attend the women's game can also watch the men's game for free.

holy moly, it's already starting
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.”- Jalen Jones

A friend of mine told me Sarah Shelton, the post from FW Nolan, looked pretty good but is thin.

I heard the starting 5 was Samuels, Severin, Gilliam, Eilliott and Christian (?).

Oh, and we have the GREAT Kelsey Hatcher on this team.

Time flies -- scary that Severin, Wills (medical redshirt coming I suppose) and Samuels are already seniors. But we can thank those three for help turning the program back in a great direction.

I plan on getting out there some this year.

Gilliam also is a senior, and has been a very good player for the last three years.

Hatcher is sitting out this season, per NCAA transfer rules. So is Hernandez.
