If we are going to hire a new coach

Postby stein000012 » Mon Jan 26, 2004 10:15 am

which it seems that we are. SMU should look at Pat Douglas the coach of UC Irvine. He's a GREAT coach and would give new life to our stagnant offense and our crappy zone defense. He's not at a big program and going to SMU would definitely be a step up for him. I live in Southern California and have seen the work he has done at UC Riverside and now UC Irvine. The guy is 471-195 Division 1 colleges.

Don't know how well Douglas could recruit Texas but he has gotten it done with less talent for years now. I will take a team with more discipline and better structure than one with better talent everyday...

That's my .02.....

If SMU is unwillingly to allow some of the "academic risks" to come to SMU, what makes you think that would hire a coaching risk? It isn't in SMU's style to hire a coach that has his terrible reputation....

I believe Copeland interviewed Fran Fraschilla the last time we were looking for a coach.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Douglass would be an interesting choice. However he coached at CSU Bakersfield, not UC Riverside.

He was fired from New Mexico and nobody has cared to hire him since...must be a reason.

You ar right CA Mustang. Douglas was at Bakersfield not Riverside, my bad. Look at his resume...Unbelievable.....

Coaches

Pat Douglass, who led UC Irvine to two consecutive regular-season Big West Conference titles (2001 & 2002, the school's first), is 95-77 at UCI and 471-195 after 22 seasons as a head coach at the four-year level. He also guided UCI to National Invitation Tournament appearances in 2001 and 2002.

Douglass, who is entering his seventh season as head coach at UC Irvine in 2003-04, led the Anteaters to the program's most successful season in 2000-01 when UCI finished with an overall record of 25-5, setting a new school mark for single-season victories.

Douglass, who has led UCI to 66 wins overall and a league-leading 41 Big West victories over the last three seasons, received a four-year contract extension in the spring of 2001 that carries through the 2007-08 season. Over the last three years, Douglass' Anteater teams have posted a combined record of 66-25 (.725).

UCI was 20-9 overall and 13-5 in the Big West for second place in 2002-03. The Anteaters finished 21-11 overall in 2001-02 and 13-5 in the Big West Conference to tie with Utah State for the regular-season championship.

The Anteaters won the school's first-ever conference title in 2000-01 with a 15-1 record and entered the Big West Conference Tournament as the No. 1 seed for the first time. For his efforts, Douglass was selected as 2001 Big West Conference Coach of the Year by his peers. The Anteaters advanced to the 2001 NIT, losing 75-71 on the road to Tulsa, the eventual NIT champion.

Douglass was selected District 15 Coach of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and also was named the 2000-01 National Coach of the Year for mid-major schools by College Hoops Insider.

In March 1997, Douglass became the sixth head coach in UCI basketball history after leading Cal State Bakersfield to three NCAA Division II titles in five years, including the 1997 championship. For his efforts, Douglass was named NCAA Division II Coach of the Decade by Division II Bulletin. He guided Bakersfield to national titles in 1993 and 1994, and Douglass was named the NABC Division II Coach of the Year all three of his championship seasons. He also was the California Collegiate Athletic Association Coach of the Year in 1993, 1996 and 1997. Douglass is part of an elite list of only six coaches in NCAA basketball history (Divisions I and II) to have won three or more national championships, joining UCLA's John Wooden, Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, Kentucky's Adolph Rupp, Evansville's Arad McCutchan, and Indiana's Bob Knight.

The winningest coach in Bakersfield history, Douglass was 257-61 (.808) in 10 seasons with the Roadrunners. He led the university to the NCAA Division II playoffs all 10 years, reaching the Elite Eight on seven occasions. His 1992-93 NCAA championship team was 33-0 as Bakersfield became just one of six four-year college teams in the nation to post an undefeated record over a 25-year span.

Douglass was the head coach at Eastern Montana (now Montana State-Billings) for six seasons prior to arriving at Bakersfield. He compiled a six-year mark of 119-57 (.676) at that school, including a berth in the NCAA Division II Final Four his last season of 1986-87 and three previous trips to the NCAA Regionals. He was inducted into that university's Hall of Fame in February 1999.

A native of Tennessee, Douglass graduated from the University of the Pacific in 1972 with a B.S. degree and teaching credential in physical education and biology. While at Pacific, he was a backcourt teammate of current Tigers' coach Bob Thomason.

Can he recruit on an even playing field at Pacific? Is he limited like Dement is? Why would he come here? It seems that the Pac 10 turns a new coach over every year. Why haven't any of those schools hired him? Before you recommend someone, let's try to figure out whether he would have any interest, whether it is worth giving up Dement's recruiting connections in Dallas and why he would be better than Dement. Dement won at Cornell. No one wins at Cornell. He built a good team at his school before he camre to SMU. He came to a better situation re conference affiliation than he is leaving. Do you think we could have hired Dement today? I don't. The only reason to fire him is if he has truly lost this team (we'll know over the last part of this season) or if he is burnt out fighting an uphill battle. If a new coach can extract more concessions re an athletic friendly major of JUCO transfer credits, then bring him on but I doubt he'll be any better than Dement unless we just get really lucky. If we get really lucky, we'll be looking for a new coach in 1-2 years.
