Basketball is much more political and involves more people in the decision process. If you are well-connected and liked by everyone involved then yes it is easier to get 3-4 studs and a top 25 team than in football, but when you are an outsider looking in, it is much more difficult to break barriers in basketball. Unfortunately, SMU has never been and is not yet a hoops haven and Coach Doherty is well connected, but doesn't yet have the traction to pick and choose. The new assistants and his newly found game plan should help us move in the right direction as evidenced by the recent improvement on the court as well as the years recruiting class.[/quote)

Newly found game plan? Recent improvement on the court?

I think the staff has missed extremely bad on a lot of recruits & the record reflects that.
Doh came in going for very athletic types & not necessary high IQ, gym rat types.
This is a very weak conference for both football & basketball & there's no excuse for the state of this basketball program. It reminds me of a Phil Bennett coached football team. Moral victories are always at a premium. We only lost by 6 @ U of H, etc..
I'm not sold that Doh has figured it out. I've liked what I've seen in some games & others its the same old story. This team finish @ least .500 in a very weak conference.

Completely agree w/the bolded portion. It's also why I like the new systems, IF they recruit to them. Right now, we have strange personnel to run the current systems. I can see the wheels moving, but the execution won't be there until the personnel meshes w/the style of play.
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.”- Jalen Jones
