Players leaving, recruits de-committing?

Postby PonySnob » Fri Feb 27, 2004 4:06 pm

Any word on any of the current players leaving or transferring due to the firing of coach Dement? What about the Roberts down in Houston - is he still coming to the Hilltop next year?

STFU
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

No one is leaving, and he is still coming. The end.

Actually that's a very legit concern. One that's been worrying me for the last few weeks. And one of the main reasons that this opening needs to be filled as quickly as possible.

You guys should calm down. It is a legitimate concern and it is something that can happen after firing a coach....We should worry about this.

Maybe we should start talking about who all would be willing to come to SMU now that Dement is gone.

We won't magically be able to pull in more recruits now that Dement is gone. It matters who we hire. Who we hire will bring in additional talent...I don't think there was anyone who will say "I don't want to go to SMU because of Mike Dement, but now that he is gone, I am going to SMU!"

Can I be brutally honest for a minute? I don't think all these guys hated Dement or anything, but I don't think many are crying over it either. And I think there was a greater chance a guy like Bhop was going to transfer had Dement stayed the way things were going. That presumes we make a decent hire of some kind. The only guys you really worry about are the young guys anyway, including BHop and Pearson. The older guys are more mature to handle this and have fewer options to transfer at this point in career anyway.

Aren't Roberts, Killen and the other guy already SIGNED -- meaning they're locked in to their commitments? I imagine the first thing on the itinerary of the new coach will be to visit each recruit and re-sell him on SMU and the future of the program. And if the new coach is as charismatic and recruiting-friendly as I hope, it should be an easy sell. SMU is a great school and a great place, and perhaps with a new voice, the program can turn upward relatively quickly.

The recruits are signed. They aren't going anywhere unless they want to sit out a transfer year. The argument comes up every year when a coach gets fired or leaves whether a recruit should be allowed get out of his commitment. The NCAA rule, I believe, still states that once a recruit signs he has to sit out a transfer year if he wants to get out of it. I doubt any of our guys will do that.

I can think of a couple we ought to encourage to pack their stuff.

The reviews on the invoming players have been strong. I'm glad it sounds like we should be able to retain them.
