Donatas is the Poster Boy for JC Recruiting

Postby SoCal_Pony » Mon Mar 01, 2004 6:41 pm

We have wasted 2 years on the Rack with the ‘hope’ that he will develop into a contributor. So far he has not. It appears he will get more PT his senior year, but only by default as both Simpson and Castro will have graduated and he will have the most experience. I would much rather churn through 2 JCs than 1 Rack.

UTEP uses 7 players. Of these, 4 are JC/CC transfers, including 4 of their top 5 scorers.

This is consistent with how the WAC teams, sans Rice and SMU, recruit and win.

add Reay to that list and I can add about 10 other SMU big men projects in the last 10 years who essentially weren't prepared to help the team until their junior years. Simpson might be the biggest exception and Castro was serviceable by his sophmore year. The Lithiuanian recruit coming on next year looks like he might be a 2-3 year project as well(what didn't he score 6 points against dear ole St Mark's. Schools like Hawaii, Fresno, UTEP et al will always have a huge advantage because their players generally will be older, physically mature and experienced. Heck Hawaii has something like 10-11 players in the upper classes.
