no downsidewell, I've been out of town and I slept on it a couple nights and I've concluded that Jimmy Tubbs is the man for the job.

To be completely honest, I'm starting to come around on Tubbs as well. I'm still not ready to say he's our man because no one really knows how good of a coach (on the court) he is. Seeing him at the SOC/Seagoville and LHHS/Skyline games tonight reminded me how well-respected he is in the DISD community (Coach Lineburg, Baylor's Scott Drew and other college recruiters were there, too). We sure need to keep those relationships alive, especially since many national programs are starting to recruit this area.
If he were to get the job, I would hope that he would surround himself with some good young assistants that would pour a lot of energy into this team. I've had the priviledge of watching OU practice a couple of times and it is spectacular. Sampson has them going hard all the time. Practices are intense and physical. If Tubbs could bring that mentailty here, it would make our players so much better.
You know, when names first started getting tossed around, I wasn't too sure about Tubbs. I met the guy a few times when he was an assistant, and he seemed like a classy guy who clearly cared about his players. But something about him made me say "great recruiter, not a head coach." That, of course, was completely unfair, since I have no actual knowledge of his coaching ability. But the more I read about him, and the more I believe about his recruiting connections, I also think he should be the guy.
Someone call Copeland, and we can bypass that whole "search committee" thing.
I'd rather let Tubbs bring in his own staff. Give him the freedom to do that the way they let Bennett bring in his guys. If Tubbs, or whoever the coach will be, wants to keep any of the current assistants, fine. If not, he doesn't need to be doing anyone any favors. It's very unfortunate that the current assistants probably will have to go elsewhere, but it's also reality and they know that.
Trust me...this is a dream job for Coach Tubbs and he has a bevy of really good coaching candidates to assist him in this job. He knows what personality, drive and abilities he is looking for in an assistant adn has thought about it for quite some time....say, like the the 13 years he spent at SMU preparing to be the head coach.
SMU...2nd to None
Jimmy Tubbs has the distinct advantage of knowing SMU, Dallas and perhaps most important...this team. If I'm Jim Copeland, I really want to talk to Tubbs and have him tell me how he would go about getting the most out of these guys. What is needed for this group to improve and find consistency? What does he believe was lacking during his tenure at SMU? What would he have done differently if he had been the head coach? What kind of game does he want to play and if they aren't a talented enough group to win in the WAC or future CUSA, then what would be his plans to upgrade the caliber of talent on his roster?
Note to Jimmy: sell Copeland and his "search committee" first, then your team, then the SMU community...and then start working on selling SMU to Dallas! Bottom line is we don't have the $$ to go after a high profile coach and even if we did, whi is available and would take this job? I agree with others who don't see Jimmy Tubbs as a big gamble. The question is...how good a salesman is he?
