Jerry Hobbie Named Assistant Coach

DALLAS (SMU) - Jerry Hobbie has been named assistant men's basketball coach at SMU, head coach Matt Doherty announced on Monday. Hobbie comes to the SMU following three consecutive postseason campaigns as an assistant coach at Houston, including the 2010 NCAA Tournament. Hobbie previously spent eight years at Fairfield and a season at Fordham, his alma mater. His teams have made the postseason in eight of his 16 seasons at the collegiate level as a player and coach.

"Jerry brings a wealth of experience," says Doherty. "He has won everywhere he has been as a player and a coach. His familiarity with Conference USA along with his talents as a shooting coach will benefit our program greatly. Lastly, Jerry is a good friend of 20-plus years and I am excited to be working with him."

In 2009-10, Hobbie helped lead the Cougars win the Conference USA Tournament Championship, including an 81-73 win against No. 25/21 UTEP in the title game. With that, the Cougars advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in nearly two decades. In 2008-09, the Cougars finished fourth in C-USA and earned a second straight College Basketball Invitational berth. The Cougars also finished second nationally in fewest turnovers per game.

During his first season with the UH program in 2007-08, Hobbie helped the Cougars to a 24-10 record, the team's highest single-season win total in nearly two decades. The Cougars also advanced to the semifinals of the inaugural CBI. The Cougars shot 77 percent on free throws that season to lead Conference USA and rank sixth nationally.

In 2006-07, he served as an assistant coach for Wilmington of the American Basketball League. That season, he helped lead the Sea Dawgs to a 22-9 record and the Central Division championship of the Blue Conference. The Sea Dawgs advanced to the semifinals of the ABA Championship before falling at Vermont, the eventual champion.

did he get fired from UH? Doesn't seem like any Texas ties really in his past.

I'm not sure he was hired to recruit, much less recruit Texas. Whoever replaces Geary needs to be a sniper on the trail

Again, Doh misses a great opportunity. Below should have been the choice:

Now, take a look @ a well assembled coaching staff with local/state connections.

Doh just doesn't get it.
