Women's Basketball Cruises Past UAPB, 80-48

Dec. 1, 2010

DALLAS (SMU) --- The SMU women's basketball team advanced its winning streak to four games with an 80-48 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Wednesday evening at Moody Coliseum. Senior Haley Day led the Mustang offense with a season-high 13 points, including four three-pointers.

"After Haley (Day) took that hit, it kind of woke her up, and she was a little more into the game and able to connect on some threes," SMU head coach Rhonda Rompola said about her senior guard, who took a hard fall to the ground after a collision with a Lady Lions player. Day's four threes tied a career record.

As a team, SMU (4-2) was balanced offensively with only Day and Christine Elliott reaching double-figures. Elliott finished with 12 points, which extends her streak of 10+ point games to five contests. The junior post finished the game a perfect 5-for-5 from the field.

"I was pleased with our second inside-out game," said Rompola about the ability of SMU to work the ball into Elliott. "We did a good job of getting the ball to Christine with her having good position on her defender."

"There were times that we didn't really take care of the basketball," said Rompola about the Mustangs, who committed 17 turnovers in the game. While the Ponies were at times plagued by turnovers, they managed to consistently find the open shooter and finished the contest with 21 assists. Sophomore Alisha Filmore led the team with five assists.

On the defensive end, SMU was able to contain the Lions to only 27.4 percent shooting and forced 21 turnovers. Freshman Raven Short and Mallory Singleton provided strong defense, each finishing with a team-high two blocks.

"Another key for us was to get down the floor on the fast break and find our shooters, which I think we did a good job of tonight," proclaimed Rompola. The Mustangs finished the game shooting 45.6 percent from the field and 13-of-28 (46.4 percent) from three-point territory.

Every SMU player scored in the game and logged double-digit minutes.

The Mustangs return to the court on Saturday with a home game against Kansas (6-0) at 2 p.m. The game will be televised on Time Warner Texas Channel (channel 185 in Dallas-Fort Worth). For ticket information call 214-SMU-GAME (214-768-4263) or visit SMUMustangs.com

Kansas is a very tough team this year. NTSU is game after and they have not won a game this year.
