The Doh Scenario

Postby Hilltop » Mon Dec 27, 2010 2:13 pm

I have a couple of questions about our current contract and SMU's current financial ability to buy out his contract. I was hoping someone with more knowledge could fill in a couple of the blanks.

1) How many years does Doh have on his contract after this season? It seems like from everything I have read he only has one more year left that we would need to buy out.

2) How much is Doh making? I have heard some speculate that his salaray is in the mid 600's, but I don't know if I have every seen this confirmed.

3) I know that SMU used to pay Phil Bennet a salary around $500,000 and Dement somewhere around $300,000. Since SMU is supposedly paying for JJ with the COC, has the $500,000 the Phil Bennet used to receive been allocated to other areas, or does SMU still have this money available to help pay for other things such as a Doherty buyout?

4) Is SMU really going to let Doherty have another year given our current record attendance and the waning support for SMU BB or will they really look at cutting him at the end of the year? Even if he does stay around, will SMU sign Doh to a 2 year extension at the end of the season with a couple of easy outs, just so he is not recruiting next year with only one year left?

I know those are a lot of questions and they kind of jump all over the place, but thank you in advance.

1) 1 or 2 years, can't remember. Thought it escalated to a 7 year deal after meeting lol incentives from the original 5 yr deal.

2)Thought i'd heard Dohs salary has gone from 600k-ish to mid to high 400s

3) I don't know official numbers, but you'd have to think SMUs AD is bleeding out yearly. I would doubt there is an extra 500k lying around at this point, but am really just putting my best guess out there.

4) Nobody really knows, but there really hasn't been credible talk of buying him out, just message board banter. If they cared about attendance waning, they wouldn't have bought into the current schedule, and paid garbage teams 25k-30k to come beat us at Moody in front of 300 people. This stuff isn't a shocker to the folks pulling the trigger on the schedule etc. They knew no one would be there and no walk-ups.
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.”- Jalen Jones
