There hasn't been any discussion on here about the terms of, or relative merit, of any potential Doh extension. We have to do something, cause the program is trending up, and recruits do ask about security. It's also rumored that something is being worked on etc. It's what it is.
As of right now, we were 5 games better last year, and 6 games better this year. We broke through locally, have profile transfers coming in, and have the most promising roster and system in 10 years or so. Meanwhile, our last under-talented team, at least for awhile, is playing fun team basketball and maxing out.
The truth is that our staff feels secure, and have momentum on the trail. We have kids finally wanting to play for us. The truth is, we haven't been in this good a shape on the trail in years, w/less guaranteed playing time to offer.
We haven't arrived, and won't for awhile, but there is real tangible reason for legit optimism

From what I hear we are more than optimistic regarding Doh's next contract....

The "fact" is that this basketball season has produced a positive surprise, one that is apparently every likely to be built upon. When such an obvious fact is spun differently it is then obvious the negative nelly's must have an agenda not connected to reality.
This is where revisionist expectations come in. I expected a 20 win regular season and possible NIT sneak in, given 1) the really weak schedule, including no one in CUSA being unbeatable at all 2) a team full of seniors with lots of PT invested in them by Doh and 3) if healthy, Papa was poised for a big season. Was i crazy? I don't think so. Ponydoh predicted 20 wins for the same reasons, but primarily the weak schedule. The biggest concerns were not shooting, or scoring, it was point guard. I didnt think it was appropriate to give Doherty a pass on point guard when his prize recruit McCoy transferred on him. Player retention is on the coach and dohs retention of his own recruits has been very questionable. So the season started, we crapped the bed at TCU and all around dismal performance. At that point, most people wrote this team off as being incapable. Perversely, the horrific showing early in the season caused people to lower expecatations so much that it made winning any Cusa games look like an act of coaching genius. In fact, we should have been a .500 team in CUSA all along with Papa leading the way and the experience we have. Experience goes a long way in college hoops.

didn't you post yesterday that an extension was a foregone conclusion? Besides, there was no discussion of an extension three years ago either, but unbenownst to nearly everyone, Osini gave Doh a rock solid two year extension to give him virtually a 7-year guarantee. Why? Still, no one knows. so forgive me for being skeptical that they won't use the CIT as premature grounds for a longer real commitment to Doh.

I agree that we should have expected improvement n the overall record, and you can count me among those that did. However, an NIT bid would have been a stretch goal, ie something you probably won't accomplish but you won't die trying. I don't see this season as the holy grail, but it has been a step in the right direction and I for one am glad that the team has managed to win 3 games in the CIT.

and what if Smith and Vilde were eligible? We would be in the NIT.
Could have really used Mook this year to grab a few boards. McCoy didn't pan out - had promise. Derek Williams was a great transfer. Mangrum was much needed and overlooked by most of us. The freshman 7 was a huge mistake (top 20 class? haha). He hasn't earned his money ($2.5M..wow) but I am grateful for the locals coming in FINALLY and a glimmer of hope moving forward.
Doesn't seem like anyone even knows what the terms of his contract are - all heresay. If he needs a 1 year lightweight contract to recruit, so be it.

I don't think they are sweating an extension, I've heard it's being worked on. I have no idea what terms etc, just that it'll give them security on the road. He has the basketball booster world securely in his corner, for many of the reasons I've stated. I'd be careful w/any air tight extensions, but it looks like we're heading down that road. I don't think the CIT is being used as much as improving 5 last year, 6 more this year, local highly rated class, and profile transfers.

I'd argue that College hoops is the one sport where experience hardly matters at ALL! Case in point being Kentucky being continually a top 10 team despite being 1 and done. This team had four year seniors and the best they could do was a CBI/CIT/CYA LATER/ berth. Yes it's the best any team in the metroplex has done this year, but this has the feeling of the Hawaii bowl from last year. We finally don't suck that we're ecstatic having success in a lower tier event. I guess it beats not being in any tourney but I don't think it's worth giving a contract extension over. Memphis will reload again and once again dominate the league.

You can spin this topic anyway you want. Personally, I think its a real positive for the program to still be playing @ this point in the season. This team has come along way in the last couple of months. They have played hard, entertaining ball, & basically have been in every game.
All SMU supporters should be happy & proud for how the team bounced back after a difficult start to the season, and the difficult finish in conference play.
I like the talent level that the program has stock piled. I had serious doubts about Doh. Still not 100% sold on him, but that's not important right now. What's important is the success the kids in this program are finally getting to experience. This is a fun time. It's great to have a competitive football & basketball team.
"We have a great bunch of outside shooters. Unfortunately, all our games are played indoors."
