Womens stats

A quick look at womens stats for the folks who support the Lady Mustangs.

The Lady Mustangs are 6-1, their best start since 1997. They will be prohibitive favorites in their remaining non-conference games, UT-San Antonio, the winner of Denver vs. Tenn.-Martin (tournament at Denver) and San Diego State. If they win all 3, it will give them the best OOC winning percentage the team has ever had.

Right now the Lady Mustangs are 3rd in the WAC in total offense, 2nd in total defense, and 1st overall in scoring margin. The SMU women also lead the WAC in Assists, Turnover margin, Assist/Turnover ration, and Steals, and are second in blocked shots. Sarah Davis leads the WAC in rebounding, while junior guard Kendall Shead is first in the WAC in both assists, assist/turnover ratio, and free throw percentage (87.5%).

This season will probably be the most competive the WAC has seen. La. Tech is still good but will not dominate the way they have in the pass. 4-5 other teams are also post-season contenders. Tulsa returned everyone from last years NIT team, and remain undefeated after upsetting Georgia Tech this past weekend.

Current RPI and Sagarin Rankings.

1.) Tulsa. 9th in RPI, 40th in Sagarin.
2.) SMU. 43rd in RPI, 64 in Sagarin.
3.)La. Tech. 51 in RPI, 56 in Sagarin.
4.) Fresno State. 52 in RPI, 61 in Sagarin.
5.) Hawaii 46 in RPI, 104 in Sagarin.
6.)Rice. 66 in both RPI and Sagarin
7.San Jose State. 169 RPI, 183 Sagarin.
8.)Nevada. 176 RPI, 161 Sagarin.
9.) Boise State. 220 RPI, 199 Sagarin.
10.) UTEP. 286 RPI, 276 Sagarin.

The New Years weekend will be a big one, as Tulsa and Rice travel to La. Tech and SMU, to open conference play.

I'm sure you noticed at the end of the UTA game last Saturday night when all five freshmen were on the floor at the same time. I think it's the first time this year that's happened. It's amazing what this young team has accomplished so far this season and looking at the teams entered, they should win the tournament in Denver this weekend also.

If any of you Ponyfans haven't been out to see Rhonda and the team this year, come on out Wednesday night at 7:00 pm when San Diego State visits Moody Coliseum. They're a lot of fun to watch.

Go Mustangs!

The WAC as a whole is having a strong year. As posted earlier, Tulsa is undefeated and top 10 in RPI. 6 teams are in the top 70. The conference is eigth in RPI behind the BCS conferences and CUSA (by only .0004). This should be a great year for the WAC and the Lady Mustangs.

Actually, the first time all 5 freshman were on the court together was the end of the Mercer game. I was sitting next to Katie Cobbs father, and he pointed it out to me.

With the last 3 wins, SMU is 9-1 and now has the best record in the WAC, although half the conference still has 1 OOC game left to play. SMU is first in the WAC in both total Offense, and Defense and is winning by an average of 14 points per game. Sarah Davis is now the second leading rebounder in the conference, but Kendall Shead remains first in all of the above categories. Freshman Janell Dodds already has her 5th double-double of the season. Janelle is 7th over all in the conference in points per game, and 2nd amongst the WACs freshmen.

The Lady Mustangs were 48th in the last RPI, but that can fluctuate a few points, day to day.
