Official SMU / coog high threadModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: Official SMU / coog high threadI understand the Doh development part but with all these freshman what would one expect anyway from any coach?...and yes I know Doh isn't good at developing players as a concept......have seen that action.
Re: Official SMU / coog high threadI am honestly so tired of the JSam hate that always comes up on this board. I am not going to talk myself blue in the face to defend him or try to go over the top, so I am merely going to state a few things that I think are tough for anyone who follows the team to argue with.
1. He is the best point guard on the roster (not counting Russell who we have not seen suit up at SMU) 2. He gives SMU the best chance of winning 3. He does not have huge upside and will never be confused with a high major PG or even a top notch mid-major starting PG 4. It is on Doherty for the fact that we don't have a better PG option but... 5. ... playing with the roster you have, he is the best PG option on the team so if you are playing to win (which a coach who thinks he is about to get canned is) then you play Jsam
Re: Official SMU / coog high threadAs for the rest of the game, we looked good in stretches- that is the best I can say.
- We played so much better than we did against Rice it isn't even funny - Rob was the non existent man for the first 25 minutes and THE man for the last 15 - Some quality movement without the ball out there- that has been rare from what I have seen over the past few weeks - As a fan, I have lost all confidence in the ability of SMU to win a close game - the D really made UH work in the second half- great job there - We have no inside toughness (still), we pair that with overall below average outside shooting ability, and very few players that can take the ball to the rack... - ... I can't seem to figure out why we have trouble scoring ![]()
Re: Official SMU / coog high threadThe Frog hate is what it is. I don't care about best chance to win games, I care about the future and he can't be the PG. It's not his fault, that whole Spring '10 cycle was a debacle, and we passed over at least 2 kids who are having far better careers at other schools than Frog. Again, not his fault, but I know tons of people who see him suit up, and just immediately equate it w/the state of SMU basketball. It's unfathomable that we were looking for a starting PG late Spring '10 for the '11 season, and grabbed a kid w/no offers, who now is entrenched for 4 yrs. That's on Doh and should hang him
Re: Official SMU / coog high thread
To add on to this...the other options we had would have chosen SMU - Doh chose JPony over those options
Re: Official SMU / coog high thread
Furthermore, Doh went out on a limb and took Frog. He enlisted his entire staff to uncover rocks after McCoy left, and they did a fantastic job mining prospects. I can't tell you how many times Shamburger & Roquemore tried to verbal, and Doh just wouldn't accept the verbal. Got into the final two for Bryon Jones, now the starting PG for George Mason. We dropped Fabyon Harris, who admittedly was a bad fit, for Frog. Oh yeah, I personally told the staff about Kevin olekaibe. Doh found him talented but not his type of player. Even if he's not a true PG, he's the best scorer on our current team, and oh yeah, daggered us when we played Fresno. To this day, I think one of the reasons Lutz left, aside from more money at a better program was the way he was undermined in that search. The guy sent me that crap youtube of Frog on a Saturday morning, asked what I thought, I told him, and he said coach was going to take a verbal from him by the end of the weekend. Lutz was gone a week later. Oh yeah, he scored autin Chatman in the next cycle, who as a frosh this year, would be the best PG on SMUs roster. Lutz could never offer him at SMU, but he gets meaningful minutes for a 25-4 Creighton team this year as frosh. Kick Doh's [deleted] to the door.
Re: Official SMU / coog high threadBy the way, Lutz will be a good head man one day. He's probably ready for a gig at a small program
Re: Official SMU / coog high thread
I think he'd try and get his hat in the ring at UNT, if Jones takes a better job. Same w/UTA & UTSA. Creighton is going to be quite good for at least 2 more years, and he'll have the resume. He's also pr savvy, relentless on the trail & liked by AAU guys etc. Best friends w/Buzz, so I could see him moving to Marquette, if Benford comes to say SMU
Re: Official SMU / coog high threadYeah, agree with all you said. On top of that I would add that Lutz relates well to the players, they respect him, etc. He's not seen as overly demanding but he's also not seen as a pushover.
Re: Official SMU / coog high threadExcellent points in support of the inevitable decision.
Re: Official SMU / coog high threadSounds like Lutz is pretty awesome. Why don't we go after him when Doh is canned?
Pony Up!
Re: Official SMU / coog high thread
Needs to cut his teeth as a head coach before he gets the reigns at a Big East program. Don't get me wrong, I was all for him as at least an interim coach of SMU while we were in CUSA (I even started a thread a few years ago called "Let Lutz Lead" - look it up), but he's just not ready for the Big East.
