Whoever the new head coach is...they should bring Lutz back as an assistant (or make him Associate Head Coach). He has the connections necessary to build this program and is a tireless worker.
Whoever the new head coach is...Who did Lutz bring in while he was recruiting for us?
Peruna is my mascot!
Re: Whoever the new head coach is...
Fewer people than he would have had Doherty not handcuffed him, and yet he still played a huge part in all of the signings we had (including Dia and McCoy) He took Geoff Groselle out from under our noses last year
Re: Whoever the new head coach is...I'm not sure Lutz would leave his current gig to come back and coach under Bruce Weber.
Re: Whoever the new head coach is...I'd bet he coach under Brown for 2-3 years as a head coach in waiting.
Whoever the new head coach is...Creighton head coach - where is his name in mix
Re: Whoever the new head coach is...Lutz wasn't allowed to offer anyone under Doh, who had to approve everyone. Austin Chatman played big minutes as a frosh PG for Creighton this past year, and was very good, while Doh wanted Frog. Chatman would easily be the most natural PG on our current roster. I think Lutz's last kid for us was Leslee Smith, who arguably is one of the best talents on the team.
Beyond all of that, he repaired much of the DFW divide post Tubbs, almost by himself. People have to remember, w/all the staff turnover under Doh, Lutz was our only active road guy, for almost 2 whole cycles in his tenure. That's an insane position to put one assistant in.
Whoever the new head coach is...
Prior to his two years at Creighton he went 59-68 at Iowa State. Only finished better than 10th in his first year at ISU. For the money SMU is tossing around, SMU should be able to get far better. The coach at St Mary's and the coach at UT-A would be interesting to look at.
Re: Whoever the new head coach is...Doherty's control freak mentality forced Lutz out. Another reason we should have pulled plug on Doherty sooner. He would have thrived under Weber and would have complemented Weber's weaknesses in recruiting.
Re: Whoever the new head coach is...
It's really funny watching guys like Lutz/Brown leave Doh, and then see how quickly they're allowed to pull the trigger on kids under their new coach. Lutz had 4 signings, 3 Texans in his first Creighton class in like 20 minutes. What's funny is that after Doh switched to the princeton, he changed his mind on Groselle, and tried to get back in the kids good graces. By then, Lutz was gone and Doh had no shot against him. the fact we never offered Chatman, or any local PG other than Kyan Anderson, in Dohs last few years is insane. A guy like Lutz would be a fantastic call for a program like UTSA, when Thompson leaves.
Re: Whoever the new head coach is...
McDermott is a very good coach. Only guy to win the MVC w/two different programs. That said, he's not right for SMU. IF SMU were looking to the MVC, gotta call Marshall first. A hire like that crushes Weber or Brown etc. In truth, he's better than Buzz in many ways. After that, all of Jacobsen, Lansing & Jankovich are fine coaches
Re: Whoever the new head coach is...Can't imagine McDermott would leave anyway with this son still at Creighton - don't see that happening. Hoopmanx - assume you don't think Lutz is ready to be a head coach for a program heading to the Big East? Do you think he would have any interest at all in returning as a lead assistant (depending on who we hire I guess)?
Re: Whoever the new head coach is...Absolutely love Lutz as did the team. However, he's not ready to be a HC...yet.
