SMU in old Commissioner's TourneyBack in the early 70's SMU had a really good team that finished second in the SWC. Back then only conference champs played in the NCAA tournament (I don't recall how independents were handled.) For two or three years, the NCAA sponsored a tourney called the Commissioner's Tournament which was for teams that finished second in their conference. Anyone else remember SMU's appearance in that tourney? I've been trying to think of the name of the guard on that team that was an exceptional player. Any help? Was Ira Terrell the center on that team? This was not later than 74 or 75 and could have been earlier.
Early in the year they lost a player for academic reasons, and Oscar Roan went up to Coach Prewitt (after they dropped the first couple of conference games) and said that he played some basketball at the school he had transferred from and he'd like to help out. Prewitt asked what school that was, to which Roan responded, "UCLA". Not long after that Roan took the Court. They went on a run and pulled out a second place conference finish with Roan and Terrell proving a potent 1-2 punch down low. Rick Billick was the point guard who was pretty good on that team as well.
