Good post Stallion. As I have stated before, a lot of the changes to the athletic model made in '88 and 89 were done without the general knowledge of the alums and before a new AD or football coach was hired. It took awhile for the reality to hit and it has taken awhile for things to get turned around. We are still not there, but we have come a long way. One of our biggest problems is that, unlike TCU, our Board of Trustees does not particularly care one way or the other about athletics at SMU. They don't appear to recognize the value of possitive athletic accomplishments on the national reputation of the University as a whole. TCU obviously does and has as a result seen a large increase in interst from potential students. I don't know how to change that, but it is very important to getting SMU back in the athletic national spotlight.
What possible reason would a Texan want Maryland to beat our sister school in Fort Worth.
Because TCU is a rival. We don't like them. We don't want them to do well. It's nothing personal, and there probably are a bunch of folks in Frogland who aren't useless. But the fact is that just as an Aggie almost always will root against a Horn, many Mustangs always will root against Frogs. It's one of the rules of rivalry. I think it is pathetic how many on this board blame some of these schools for SMU's problems.... We all have heard some outlandish claims on this board, and many of us have made them. But I don't recall reading anyone blaming TCU for SMU's problems. We just root against them, that's all. As a Cowboys fan, I root against the Redskins, Eagles, 49ers and Giants. They're the enemy, so I root against them. It's not unusual.
Is it much of a rivalry, they have owned us in football and basketball for the last decade. SMU fans make a much bigger deal about playing TCU than they make about playing SMU. Perhaps we will have a competitive football or basketball game against them during the remainder of this decade.
They certainly act like they've won the Super Bowl when they beat us in football. And there were a bunch of little Froggies who were inconsolable when our hoops team beat them last year. Act like a proud member of froggy nation if you want, but it is a rivalry. A recent spurt doesn't end that, just as beating them didn't end it in our favor, either.
TCU proves what? Their Football team went to the same bowl game ours went to - and nobody cares about their basketball team either - they ain't no big deal - the only difference is they don't know their 15 minutes of fame is over.
I, for one, think we should aim a little higher then yesterdays news.
Why don't you even try making the news before you start downplaying someone else's success. Don't throw stones when you live in a glass house.
Judging by our pitiful play on the football field the last since 1989 (except for the 1 winning season) and the lack of NCAA trips in men's hoops, when will our athletic department start aiming higher than what they have been?
