Sometimes it is not always clear to the players who really got called for the foul. They may rely on the scoreboard to see if they actually got credited with the foul. Since it is the official scoreboard, they should be able to rely on it.
Funny story. There was a guy on the Bulls BITD that changed his jersey number. Why? His number was similar to Jordan's and he claimed that he kept getting credited with Jordan's fouls!!
I would think that someone sitting on the bench should always have knowledge of how many fouls a player has and if a player has 4 fouls the player should know. And if a scoreboard operator is being used to take care of that for us then this is a wake up call to do it differently. I can see where a player might have 3 fouls and he thinks two but when a player has 4 fouls, especially an impact player, he needs to know in order to play properly.
There's a coach or ga that tracks this. I'm 100% sure the staff isn't relying on the scoreboard for this info.
