SMU basketball will begin a new era in January when the Mustangs start their inaugural season in the American Athletic Conference and open the doors to renovated Moody Coliseum.

The Mustangs will play their first American game on the road against Cincinnati on Jan. 1. They will make their Moody reopening against three-time NCAA champion Connecticut on Jan. 4 and then will close the season against defending NCAA champion Louisville on March 5.

SMU fans will be able to see every American team because conference members have home and road games with each league opponent. All of SMU’s 18 league games will be nationally televised.

In addition to Louisville, the Mustangs’ conference home schedule includes 2013 NCAA Tournament teams Temple, Memphis and Cincinnati. Their non-conference schedule will be released soon.

Moody’s $47 million renovation is scheduled to be completed in December, featuring new lobbies, expanded concourses, loge boxes, and private and group suites.

SMU returns all five starters from last season’s team which went 15-17. The Mustangs will add a recruiting class ranked 14th nationally and three transfers. Season ticket information is available at smumustangs.com; or 214-768-4263.

This may have been news to Bill Nichols, but for all of us on this board, we knew that we would have home-and-homes against all of our conference opponents.

Regardless of whether it was news to him, I am sure it was news to some of the people who read it in the paper.
