PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU) - Keena Mays was named the first American Athletic Conference women's basketball Player of the Week after leading the Mustangs to a third straight season-opening win, conference officials announced.

The senior, who missed the first eight games of last season due to NCAA transfer rules, scored 22 points, eclipsing 20 for the 10th time in 24 games at SMU, shooting 40 percent on 3-point attempts. She also had eight rebounds, five assists and four steals in SMU's 87-65 win against Grambling State.

She had 14 of her 22 points in the first half of Sunday's win, going 4-for-9 from the field and 3-for-4 at the free throw line in the first 20 minutes. As a junior, Mays was named Conference USA Player of the Year, and was a finalist for All-America, averaging 18.4 points per game.

SMU went 21-10 last season, winning the regular-season conference championship with a 12-4 mark. It was the ninth 20-win season, and the fourth in the last six seasons. SMU also advanced to the WNIT, making its 12th postseason appearance during head coach Rhonda Rompola's tenure.
