Questions for all you fellow Mustang fans!!

Postby TyDerby » Sat Feb 22, 2014 10:25 am

I am new to this site ( really glad I came across it!!) I am a huge SMU fan who lives up in Indiana!! It is so awesome to see how this team has come up from the bottom to where they are now, I would of never every thought this was possible. Being a huge basketball fan I couldn't be more excited. I have a few questions that you guys may have some great insight on

1) How long do you think Larry will coach realistically? ( I have always thought he would be here 3 or 4 years)
2)Once he is gone, do you think we will still be able to attract the same type of recruits?
3) Do you think Coach Jankovich will stay for the long term once the team is his?

For my Christmas present, I had the opportunity to get courtside seats when the played at UIC on Dec 4th this year. It was absolutely awesome!! Had the chance to meet Larry Brown, Eric Snow, the entire team and had a long talk with AD Rick Hart before and after the game!! This team is first class and so easy to root for!! PONYUP

I am hoping through 2017 to see his son graduate. Get it up and going and stable. Similar to what Calipari did for Josh P. The way he talks, it sounds very hard for him to step away from bball. Not sure he likes the thought of retirement.

Says he wants his daughter to go through SMU also. He and I may need to share an oxygen tank but there is a chance he could be here even longer.

Welcome to the board. I'm not an SMU "insider" like many on here (or at least like they think they are), but here's my take:

#1) I think he stays through at least the 2015-2016 season (so two more after this). I know there are the comments re: his kids, but I'm not buying. This is his last college gig, but if I were a betting man I'd say it's on his bucket list to do one last NBA tour. Frankly, if HCLB would have known that the BE would die, he's still back at Kansas. I'm just not sure any teams will be calling.

#2) Yes, with the right coach and staff. The fundamentals of SMU being a top bball school are in place. Big unknowns at this point are 1) how is SMU impacted if/once the Mavs get really hot again (there's a reason why a guy like Bill Self doesn't want a team in KC), 2) how will fans react once the new car smell is gone, and 3) how will fans react when the conference gets watered down next year.

#3) God, I hope not. Jank is a good coach, but I'm not a fan. Buy him out and wish him well. SMU needs bigger (IMO).

Just my two cents and as any Ponyfan will tell you, worth what you paid.

IMO, it all comes down to where he thinks he see the bright lights one last time.

Ya, I keep seeing people saying he stays for both kids to get through but I don't buy that at all.. He's already 73, as much as I love him as our coach, I just don't see him coaching that much longer.

Well, there are times in life you grab a cold beer, sit back, and hope you're wrong. This would be one of those times.

jank will be a great coach for us. No idea why anyone would have an issue with him. where would we be without Nic? Nic is here due to Jank. He will surprise you if you underestimate him.

Jank was a .500 coach at UNT. Started to develop the Illinois St Redbirds in to a 20 win program after serving as an assistant coach to KU's Bill Self.

Do not question his ability to recruit. Pulled some big fish at KU (not to mention Nic). Ask Coach Drew if pulling recruits is enough.

we will see, I don't see too many 75 or 76 years olds coaching or dealing with the NBA guys. He just wants to teach, they don't listen. Only Larry knows. Sure wish people would ask him why he jumped around so much. I never heard a good explanation or a point blank question about that.

1) no idea, but I'd say one more after this. That's his chance at a run and the roster turns over in a massive way 2 years from now. If he wants to stay longer, I'd bet we're heavy in the transfer market this spring. He doesn't want a team full of frosh in year 4. After this year, he'll want to gear up for a run every single year, no pseudo rebuilds.

2) only way we continue to recruit like this w/Jank in place is to promote ulric, maybe associate head coach, and give him a massive raise. Then, grab another monster to couple w kt. It's all bout the staff.

3) I never wanted Jank, as he's been average most of his career. Good recruiter, sub par x & o guy that runs a really loose ship, see I'll st. There were about 3 guys in the MVC alone, that I preferred to Jank.
