I agree.

probably not. We were ranked ~30th in that poll. Not sure we could jump 5 spots.

Anyone know what the Coaches Poll generally includes obscure universities?

The USA TODAY Sports Board of Coaches is made up of 31 head coaches at Division I institutions. All are members of the National Association of Basketball Coaches. The board for the 2012-13 season: Tommy Amaker, Harvard; Tevester Anderson, Jackson State; Ronnie Arrow, South Alabama; Randy Bennett, Saint Marys; Eddie Biedenbach, North Carolina-Asheville; Jim Boeheim, Syracuse; Rick Byrd, Belmont; Tim Cluess, Iona; Keith Dambrot, Akron; Steve Donahue, Boston College; Scott Drew, Baylor; Matt Driscoll, North Florida; Steve Fisher, San Diego State; Bruiser Flint, Drexel; Tim Floyd, Texas-El Paso; Mark Fox, Georgia; Ben Jacobson, Northern Iowa; Rob Jeter, Wisconsin-Milwaukee; Mike McConathy, Northwestern State; Bob McKillop, Davidson; Ron Fang Mitchell, Coppin State; Matt Painter, Purdue; Dave Paulsen, Bucknell; Saul Phillips, North Dakota State; Steve Pikiell, Stony Brook; Randy Rahe, Weber State; Herb Sendek, Arizona State; Shaka Smart, Virginia Commonwealth; Andrew Toole, Robert Morris; DonVerlin, Idaho; Bob Williams, UC-Santa Barbara.

Dangerous territory for SMU.

Yeah, but not TOO much ahead of them. Now, if we get Myles Turner from them, the investigation starts the next day (why I'd rather just not get him . . . just not worth the headaches/baggage).

I'm really conflicted about this line of thinking. I have thought this way many times, including about Myles Turner. But this is also how Texas wins. They use their power and influence to bully you down to "your proper place." I wonder if we will always just be 2nd class in Texas until we stop treating ourselves this way. At some point, we have to go toe to toe with them on recruiting without worrying that they will conspire against us again. We know they will. But maybe we can build the relationships in the local scene to expose them properly this time - something we failed badly at in the DP era. It's not like Texas isn't playing the game.

I'm not saying your approach with Turner doesn't make a lot of sense. It does. We're not established yet and there is a lot of value to not making enemies when we haven't fully arrived yet. Just curious about a deeper discussion. We can't play the recruiting game looking over our shoulder at Texas, right?

Look, this thinking has simply got to STOP. Yes, we got boned hard because we had the audacity to hang with the UT's of the world, and instead of standing up we not only took it we buried ourselves even deeper than the "mighty ones" did. And guess what? It all happened almost 30 DAMNED YEARS AGO!!! Don't get me wrong, I understand the hesitation. But we either need to decide to be a big time player (and grow the stones that go with it), or shut the [deleted] thing down. This isn't about "arriving" or "establishing" anything; this is about saying that we're no longer afraid of the big bad wolf and playing the game the way everyone - from UT all the way down to freaking Stephen F. Austin - plays it. If Myles wants to be a Mustang - then I'll welcome him with open arms and if need be scrape together whatever spare change I can for the legal team required to kick the NCAA hypocrites off our beautiful campus. Enough is enough.

That's kinda what I was hinting at. Let's play on an even playing field with everyone else.

It's time to punt the fear of te NCAA behind us. Sure they took us behind the woodshed before but that was 30 years ago but by the way, we run a clean program. I'm not afraid o them anymore because we just don't do what the sketchy basketball recruiters do (looking at Baylor and Kentucky).

I seriously doubt our recruiting staff/LB/admin are worried at all. I'm just saying that digging will occur and it probably has started and will be relentless (hell, look at the Shipp stuff . . . it starts even when we get a WHIFF of any kind of national attention). Ultimately, I don't really care and want us to be competitive with the Dukes/Kentuckys/Kansases of the bb world. I just hope we are smarter/play our cards tighter this time around.

Here's my opinion:

I'd rather we play, and whip!, Texas with a roster full of 25-125 guys if they get a "stud" every once and a while. Versus we never play them but have a better record/best recruits out of Texas and they get jealous and start sycing all their slimy media on us.

our AD and our coaches have no recollection of any of that and couldn't care less. Time for us to let it go also. Its getting older every day.
