Press Conference ReactionsPost 'em here. I am very, very impressed, with both the new coach and the new AD, and pumped up about this hire.
There were probably twice as many people there as there were for Steve-O's introductory press conference, and the reception was very good. My initial thought was the same as the first time I met Coach Bennett after he was hired: if I was a lot younger, a lot lighter, taller, faster and had any athletic ability or talent at all .... this is a guy I'd want to play for.
Sure, he has a reputation for kicking tail, but that's not a bad thing -- almost every good coach out there does that. Anyone who thinks Coach K or Roy Williams doesn't jump all over his players from time to time is hallucinating. Equally impressive was the conversation I had with one of his assistant coaches. I think his name is James Stafford (sorry, Coach -- I'll learn). He also sounded like he would suit up tomorrow and play for Coach Doherty if he had the chance. He said when he went to Florida Atlantic to interview for a job on Coach Doherty's staff, they talked for an hour and a half and he was sold -- said there was no decision to be made. Coach Stafford also talked about how he and Coach Doherty have some relationships in Dallas already in place with HS coaches and AAU coaches, so while they are realistic about the hurt feelings that might be out there about Coach Tubbs' dismissal, he sounded confident that with time, those wounds can -- and will -- be healed. Devon Pearson sounded as excited as he has in any time that I've talked to him. He sounded like he wished the season started tomorrow. He said Coach Doherty and made a great impression on the team in their initial meeting, and he thinks the players already are getting excited to play for him. We'll have a story later tonight. Might be later in the evening, because I'm staying late at work after playing hooky for a couple of hours.
Yes. Coach Doherty sounded like he had a clear understanding of what happened, and he seemed OK with the situation, saying that "it's an issue that has to be dealt with, but there's always issues when you take over a new job" (paraphrasing -- don't have my notes with me.)
No, and I thought that was pretty revealing personally. Calvin asked Doherty if he had any reservations or concerns about the way Tubbs was handeled and the effect it had on his friends with the DISD. Doherty handled the question very well and said he had already been in contact with two local coaches. He said he intends to have a high profile with local schools and believes in recruiting from inside out, meaning local first. None of that is his exact words, just my version of what I remembered. It was a very positive and impressive news conference, and I would rate the three men as speakers in this order. 1) Dr. Turner 2) Coach Doherty 3) Steve Orsini
I did'nt think Mr. Orsini did a bad job, but he seemed nervous and stumbled around a few words at times. I see where you and I are in disagreement over the question of violations being asked. I may be wrong, but I did'nt hear violations.
One small comment, when I connected the "buzz" in the room seemed very high before it started. Is that a reflection on the technology or was the audience large and animated beforehand?
Okay, maybe the questions about the alleged Tubbs violations were asked by the press, maybe they (gutlessly) weren't. Did anybody ask him what his position with regard to cheating boosters, a la ax Williams, was going to be? Does the new coach have the authority to ban Maxie from any and all contact with the team?
If you ban Max Williams, you are biting the hand that feeds you. They will not be doing that!!!!
DBB
Unfortunately you are probably correct, but he DID initiate burgergate by providing the money and then instigating one more NCAA mark against us. Was he at the press conference?
Yeah, well Jimmy Tubbs fed from that hand and look what happened to him. Fired for burgers and Cheer!! Let's hope Doherty is smarter than to allow Max Williams near his team. I'd like to see him yank grandkid's scholarship as his first official act.
