Coach Jones is a pretty good BBall recruiter too

Postby SMU 86 » Wed Jul 29, 2009 10:45 am

With June Jones playing a roll in getting Paul McCoy here it looks like he could be helping Doh get another good player in Marcus Holyfield (since he wil be playing both sports).

Unlike McCoy his major sport will be football. Basketball is secondary in this case. So Doh still has a scholarship to give.

I'm starting to think Doh is going to hold onto the remaining ride & use it next year.
That would give us 3 and we appear to be in on several very good prospects in the 2010 class.
Of course now that I've made this comment Doh will probably announce a signing using the remaining ride.

Are you sure? Stallion said in another thread that he has never played football, so I doubt football would be his primary sport. Could be wrong, but he's generally pretty accurate

Yes, he is coming on as a football recruit and will start practicing with the team on Aug. 7th. The scholarship will go towards football since that is the first sport he is doing. He has not played football but the coaches like his athleticism. Coach Jones may also trying to help Coach Doh again. Also, when I say primary sport I mean that is where the scholarship will count toward, but he will be better at basketball initially I am sure. Neither Stallion or myself are contradicting each other.

If June Jones offered him the scholarship, I'm assuming it's a football scholarship, meaning he'd have to play for Jones.

And personally, I'll believe he'll play two sports when I see it. One sport is plenty hard for most college student-athletes, when balanced with academics. There are very few who can do two.

Let me start out by saying Im sure the kid is a great athlete and that fact alone might enable him to play either football, basketball or both. However, it looks like Jones is doing this more as a favor to the family(not saying its necessarily a bad thing) as he obviously has a relationship with them. The only thing he can do(within his power) is offer the kid a football scholarship.

My guess on this is that when the kid makes it to campus he, with the help of June, tries to sell Doh on the fact that he can really play basketball(which is his primary sport). If Doh likes him and wants him full time, he can offer the kid one of his BBall scholarships. In the event that Doh is not interested, Jones keeps the kid on FBall scholarship and tries to turn him into a wideout.

I remember the year Oscar played football and basketball. It was Oscar's senior year, he finished football season and was waiting for the NFL draft and graduation (Oscar was an All American tight end). Sammy Hervey was declared academically ineligible for the second semester and the basketball team was short-handed. Oscar went to coach Prewitt and said, I'd be glad to help if I can. Prewitt asked him if he'd played basketball before, Oscar said, well before I transferred here to play football, I played basketball at UCLA for Coach Wooden. It took Coach Prewitt about 1 second to say, "sure come to practice". So Oscar played the second half of the season and helped lead the Mustangs to a second place finish in the SWC that year.

Due to current NCAA rules if a young man stars out on a football scholarship and plays another sport in addition to that the football scholarship would count. He would have to quit football for the basketball scholarship to count. I do think Coach Jones is trying to help Coach Doh on this one.
