Throwback Thursday---Jeryl Sasser!!!

Postby ponyscott » Thu Aug 11, 2011 8:34 am

This is from DFW Metroplex Hoops today on FB and I totally agree. I remember when he committed to SMU as my son and I were so excited that Jerryl stayed home. He was a fun and unique player to watch and appreciate what he did for SMU in the 90's. Who will be the next Jeryl at SMU?

During the mid-90s, Kimball High School plowed through opponents left and right. Just as the reigning 4A state champion Knights do now, they did much of the same back then. People came in droves to watch their brand of basketball, and one of the players who was a staple of those years was Jeryl Sasser.

Sasser did it all in those days. The man could score, rebound, pass, and he also did the dirty work, the little things a team needs a player to do to win. He could score from the outside, but he had post game as well, which is something rarely seen these days from players if they already aren’t developed in the post.

The thing about Sasser is that he was known more as a perimeter player, but was so versatile that he could do work anywhere. He helped Kimball to consecutive state championships, won MVPs in tournaments, all-state honors, and plenty of other accolades along the way.

He decided to stay close to home and play college ball over at SMU. During his time with the Mustangs, he continued to improve his game. By the time his four years came to an end, he left his mark all over the school’s record books, including holding the mark as the all-time leading scorer in school history.

Brings back some great memories like the Fresno St. game. Great crowd, Courtney Alexander, "The Shark".

Those teams were so poorly coached, it still makes me angry. It was like in order for Dement to get those kids, he had to give them the green light and say don't defend anyone.

Could have been the grass Sasser was smoking in the pike house before games...

The 1999-2000 was arguably the most disappointing in school history. NCAA tournament talent and they pissed it away. The week against TCU (some ridiculous run by them in the second half (like 32-8) and Tulsa (Willie dribbles the ball off his foot) was just a killer.

I've always contended that week set the tone for what SMU basketball evolved into the 2000s.

apparently he's a man of God now. Ballers tend to smoke, and they definitely like to run while blazed.

I think Dement just said "do whatever you guys want on offense" and I'll coach the 1-3-1 defense and get drilled on 3's.

Sasser's screwball was a thing of beauty. Loved the Shark - great rivalries with Fres State, Tulsa, and Hawaii

I remember a game where he dribbled the ball up the court with each bounce behind his back... that was pretty cool...

He had the most odd shot release I have ever seen.....he was so quirky, but he was fun to watch. He dominated at Kimball HS...

He did this @ Thomas & Mack just after he took the game over & shut the crowd up. Its wasn't only aesthetically cool, it messed w/Greedy Daniels in a big way.

Sasser was one of the most entertaining basketball players I've ever had the pleasure of watching. Not shocked he didn't make it in the NBA, but that guy was the very definition of basketball cool in my book.

I played poker with Tark at the Venetian in Vegas a couple of weeks ago. Towel chewing was a bigtime tell.
