Disappointing studentsWhere did last nights students come from. Nothing like previous games this season. They were so dead it looked like they were Zombies. Never seen such a lack of enthusiasm in a student section before. Even for SMU, this was a new low. Just pathetic!
Re: Disappointing students
It's rush week give them a break. They're on a 4 day drink-hangover-drink cycle that does not include much sleep.
Re: Disappointing studentsI know we jump on the students but what do you think about the non student crowd?

You haven't been around long. We have lots of lack. You're not gonna get much out of a contingent whose attendance is "mandatory".
Re: Disappointing studentsI remember reading an article in the USA Today March of last year about the decline in student attendance at football and basketball games.
The conclusion of the article was that this generation of stidents is looking for immediate gratification and gets bored sitting through a 2 hour game. Their multi tasking mindset wants to see the game highlight and score then move onto the next thing - facebook, spotify, countless news and social networking feeds. Of course they want a winning team to brag about and feel good that their school is seen as "winners" but they don't necessarily want to spend time supporting the team. For them to invest 2 hours - 4 for football- is an eternity when all they want is to see the highlights of the game and the score. This mindset explains whay NFL and college stadiums have become multi media entertainment centers designed to entertain with jumbotrons in addition to the play on the field. The NFL and NBA know they have to have a "show" in addition to the game to get people to the stadium. They have to offer something that people want but can't experience at home. This is where we are as a society: The product is valued more than the process. The same can be said for hunting and fishing. Our generation spent time finding the lease, building blinds ect. Now more and more people simply want to fly in, drive to the blind, shoot the deer and fly out the next day. Its not good nor bad just a testiment of where our society is moving. Pony 81
Re: Disappointing studentsI got in too late to go down to the student section, so me and my friends sat in the seats directly across from the student section, right above the courtside seats. I kept yelling at them and telling them to stand up and show some enthusiasm.
Re: Disappointing studentsI think the harshness is justified. No excuses. I see other student sections on espn etc and see what it can and should be. As far as the non student sections, I thought it was ok, not great, but better than the students. The students are young enough that they should be able to handle a hangover, lack of sleep, whatever. No excuses. Just show some passion.
Re: Disappointing students
I have been around long enough, going to every home men's basketball game since 1981. It was not good last night.
Re: Disappointing studentsjust a theory here, but I assume a big part of the problem is that we don't have a very knowledgeable student population. By that I mean that I doubt there were very many on campus that realized we were playing one of the best teams in our conference and just how big an upset this would have been.
I thought our guys played pretty well but they just wore us down in the end. Would our guys have drawn enough energy from a rowdy home crowd to pull this one one? I don't know, but I know if wouldn't huret our chances. Memphis is the only "brand name" in our conference. I expect that's the only home game (other than TCU of course) that would draw any significant number of students
Re: Disappointing studentsRush Week attendees: probably mildly resent being told they have to go, probably more concerned about if they look cool enough to be a PKA or the hookers SAE promised them tonight
Re: Disappointing studentsit would not real tough to look cool enough to be a pike
