Don't they have free meal plans on campus?

Yes, three meals a day. And have money limits on them. I know a lot of my football buddies had to buy more out of their own pocket because the allotment wasn't near enough. Depending on the scholarship, they have certain amounts they can buy. I think my buddy on the baseball team only had $100 per week or $150 to spend on food. May sound like a lot but anyone that has been to an on-campus dining hall knows a meal is about $8 minimum. Now imagine that for someone that is an athlete and likely eating twice as much as the average student. Not trying to justify them starving but it is BS on how little they get for meal plans and crap.

For SMU they receive free breakfast and a stipend of around $1700/month. If they want the lunch and dinner meal plan they have to forfeit a portion if their stipend. I want to say $300.

Such a terrible deal. They should just not participate if it is so bad. I have a couple football player friends/acquaintances here, SMU, that say they no problems making ends meet. They say the people that have a problem with rent and food have the same problem every month but some how have a plethora of shoes and going out money.

I was friends with several scholarship athletes at SMU who were not from privileged backgrounds, and none of them had any trouble getting through SMU financially. They were always able to go out to bars, eat out, etc. Methinks Napier is full of [deleted]

The monthly is based on the cost of living where the campus is located. That's why SMU pays so much vs TT or TAMU....but UCONN is in an affluent area...highly doubt his claim. Grandstanding.

His mom can sure afford to go to every game on national tv. She should have skipped a couple of games so he could have some spending money.

I know that the SMU players stipend is slightly higher than my VA stipend and my stipend if I was going to UCONN comes to $2115/month.
