-assertions of baby sitting
-assertions that representative directly involved herself in SA academic course work
-assertions that she obtained his pass word to on line course recommended by SMU and completed all of the SA assignment and exams for on-line course
VERY DAMAGING

Yeah, this is pretty much a big donkey punch. Methinks some of the PFs are guilty of badly underestimating the situation, myself included.

-SA had basically no awareness of the online course
-SA was told "Don't worry about it" and was later told that "she had completed all of his coursework for the online course"
-Administrative assistant encouraged SA to fabricate a story to save her job
-Assistant Coach was told in 3 way call and said he didn't want to be be involved and hungup
-Assistant coach never reported violation
-Brown did not report violation for a month after learning about it
-SA denied admission to SMU by Faculty Committee but SA was subsequently admitted through internal appeal by Provost "based on the broader university perspective and needs"
-SA was an "extraordinary exception" to admission standards
-Administrative assistant was clearly caught in a lie, admitted she had lied in later interview then halted all further cooperation and resigned from SMU within days

Important to note the NCAA has not hit SMU w/ the dreaded “lack of institutional control.” Says it didn’t get that bad, basically.

"-Brown did not report violation for a month after learning about it"

Wow, a whole month. Bottom line, it was reported. Was it not self reported? Compared to twenty for UNC and a whole decade for Syracuse. SMU is clean, at least to a whole bunch a institutions out there and has been artificially so because of the NCAA. The NCAA has kept SMU from competing for 30 years, why would that change now?

A lot of the reaction this morning is to the penalties, which are honestly pretty excessive when compared to what has happened at other schools.

But, in all fairness, what happened with Frazier and the online course is really bad and I can't believe we did that and thought we could get away with it.

I think you hit it right. What happened was worse than we thought, but relative to recent incidents and penalties (Syracuse) the punishment doesn't quite match.

Most online courses are a joke. He couldn't just take it himself?

KF's reading level was reportedly incredibly low for his age.

-Brown knew of the confession of violations from SMU's representatives but took no action-reported to no one up the administrative chain-

(Damaging) even though he knew of the confessions he didn't report them to the NCAA at the time of interview with the NCAA. He lied about not having conversations with the SA and assistant coach-later corrected in same interview

Sounds to me like SMU on its own rooted out the problem and corrected it on its own pretty swiftly. The assistant that did the online work was removed and the coach assistant is now gone. The SA involved sat out conference and tournament play. What else was there to do?

It never does when it comes to SMU and the NCAA.

LARRY BROWN at final NCAA hearing:
"But I realize, you know in hindsight that was a terrible mistake on my part. I wish I could have changed all that. But we had that interview with the NCAA, I don't know why I lied. You know, dealing with people that I really care about, and I used terrible judgment, and I tried to acknowledge that as quickly as I could, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I realize that"
