Well I'm glad that you generalized that they are all just dumb jocks-not just the minorities. BTW Jerry LeVias was an Academic All-American. Our second minority Rufus Cormier went on to Yale Law became one of the most respected lawyers in Houston.

Most of you sound ridiculous. It is not OK to short-change student-athletes in pursuit on athletic success.

Sure, the majority of athletes at SMU would not be admitted based on their academic background, but SMU recognizes their talents can be an overall benefit to the university. In exchange, the school provides educational opportunity, and athletic training/exposure for the handful that are gifted enough to make a living playing sports.

Every scholarship player on the MBB will have the opportunity to make a short living playing basketball (from decent-to-holy [deleted] amounts of money). If they want to make money now, they can withdraw and go abroad. But for as long as they represent SMU or any collegiate team, they need to pass legitimate college courses. For incoming students with an 800 SAT score, that will require a Herculean effort - but it can be, and has been, done before.

Don't short change these kids (grown men). Go to every class, go to office hours, LEC, and beg until you get the grade.

*I very much want to point out that many are suggesting we take mostly under-educated black males and lowering the bar towards an SMU degree so much that you good alums would not seriously consider them for any roles besides manual labor and sales. Whats the benefit of the SMU network when people know you didn't earn your way in?

I don't think anyone wants to prevent athletes from getting a legit education if they are so inclined. I don't think it is slighting them to suggest that poor background or poor educational talent or the requirements of playing ball may make some pursuits too difficult for some. Just like most of the population who could never get into SMU, and won't because they aren't top athletes.

If they had to finish school to go to the NBA I would agree. But the rule is they only need one year. So the school is secondary to a truly gifted player. If SMU can be a conduit to the pros for a young man who could make millions and perhaps come back some day and endow a scholarship or other benefits back to the school that provided the conduit I am happy.

Suppose it is lower than an 800 on a sliding scale? Suppose the athlete goes to every class, goes to office hours, LEC, and begs and still come up short in an upper level history class that he was way over his head in. If the kid is trying as hard as he can in the situation he is currently in don't you think some grace should be extended?

If you take a step back, for one class to be the difference maker in your eligibility - it means you've been treading water for a long time. I see your "suppose" and raise you another. Suppose that someone has done everything in their power for the majority of their college tenure and is hovering a 2.01. I would think and hope that a professor(s) would do everything in their power to help them succeed.

In MK's situation, if its a GPA issue (as opposed to progress towards degree) - then he's been at SMU for at least 5 terms , long enough to take at least 60 hours. 1 Class didn't sink his ship. This has likely been an issue for a few semesters.

SMU has gone all-in with regards to admitting athletes that meet NCAA minimums. We need to do the same with academic support to ensure their success in the classroom. Many college's have used Summer Bridge programs that try to address the gap for students that are not (quantifiably anyway) prepared for college. SMU has one, http://www.smu.edu/academics/mustangbridge . We need more things like that.

ZERO conference championships in football or men's BB in....how long...???

I am sorry, but SMU is not Harvard. It is not even the best school in Texas. The academic integrity argument is total BS. That is why we are where we are and TCU is where they are in FB. And why Baylor is where they are in BB and FB.

Can we please get over ourselves and get MK eligible so we can actually be good at a sport for once? Sheesh

My prediction, MK will become eligible and SMU/MK will keep their academic integrity. Absolutely no reason we can't have both when reasonbable heads get together. Quid Pro Quo.

Give me evidence that we can have both...because in my 20 years following SMU as a student, alum and fan, we have never had athletic success. Ever.
