Billy G UpdateModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: Billy G UpdateBob Beaudine is an SMU alum who is deeply involved in both the athletic department (chairs the Doak Walker award selection committee) and the B-school (member of the board). That's the big reason, then there are little things like their office is here in Dallas, and they handled the behind the scenes negotiations that eventually brought June Jones here, and Orsini seems very happy with them, based on how those talks went.
Re: Billy G Update
Do you know if they have intentions of having basketball industry folk involved? “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Billy G Update
Don't you mean apparel/shoe industry folk ("Big Shoe")
Re: Billy G UpdateDont know, sorry. That doesnt mean yes, or no, it means "not that I know of". The search may not get past the "interest" stage for awhile, as ASDF said, there are a couple of prominent boosters that like Doh so much they want him to stay.
Re: Billy G Update
Yea, I keep hearing he's here through next year, which I don't mind. Much depends on how we close out, I'd imagine. If we don't end up using hoops consultants, I have very little hope that we'll make the right hire. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. Re: Billy G Update
Pelphrey has alot of things on his resume that fit the profile our AD and fans seem to like. He was All-SEC as a player at Kentucky, had his jersey retired, was part of "The Unforgettables" (players that stayed at Kentucky, instead of bailing out when they got in NCAA trouble). He did stints as an assistant under Eddie Sutton and Billy Donovan, then took over a perennial cellar dweller at South Alabama, and took them to the NCAA tournament. He made the Elite Eight as a player, and has a championship ring as an assistant coach (Florida). Lots of high profile points on the resume, which our constituency seems to like, and he's reasonably charismatic. Our fan base would like him. He started out well at Arkansas, took them back to the NCAA tournament and beat Indiana in the first round, their first tournament win in almost 10 years. His second year started out well, going 12-1 in non-conference, including wins over Oklahoma and Texas. Since then they have absolutely fallen apart behind a torrent of off-court problems and discipline issues. They seem to play undisciplined as well, from what I've seen. They score a boatload of points, but they also give up a ton on defense. Pelphrey has some points in his favor, but you have to wonder what has happened over the last year and a half, because the program seems to be in chaos. Personally, I like the guy, but I would want to hear his side of the discipline issues, before ever considering a hire. While we're chatting about former Arkansas coaches, I cant believe no one has mentioned Nolan Richardson. If we are going to get excited about guys with tremendous baggage, like Gillespie, Quin Snyder, and Fraschilla, Nolan actually has more success, and less mess to go with it. And recruiting doors would be open to him around this area, no question. The board has mentioned every retread and burn out from the last decade, someone actually brought up Steve Lavin awhile ago. I guess Nolan has just been keeping too low a profile lately, kind of uncharacteristic of him.
Re: Billy G UpdateHave you seen how many players have left the Arkansas program under Pelphrey? Would be real careful before you want him. Seems he has a lot of the problems you don't like about Billy.
Re: Billy G UpdateSo, if doh is retained for next year what will happen to next years recruiting? Obviously no recruit wants to commit to a school knowing that the coach will not be there the following year. If SO were to give him an extension then I can imagine a mass mutiny among few bball fans that are left. Can we really afford to let him drive this program further into the ground??

Re: Billy G Update
If they give him an extension, I would imagine there would be certain milestones he would have to achieve to get the extra year, i.e. he has to hit 17 wins or something like that. The donkey's name is Kiki.
On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney? Good, Bad...I'm the one with the gun.
Re: Billy G UpdateIn an interview a while back SO very clearly stated that anything less than .500 would be unacceptable and action would be taken. I can't imagine giving him another year with milestones that low. Doh just needs to pack his bags and 'get the hell out of dodge'. He has had 4 years to turn this program around. It is apparent that is not happening.

Re: Billy G UpdateIf a change were to be made I think we should look at Tommy Amaker, what do you think of him PonyDoh?
Re: Billy G Update
swiss cheese extension that allows he & the staff to say they have a long-term contract, but it would have every out imaginable for the AD, w/o repercussion. No matter who is the coach come April, we're not going to have 5 ships in '11 like we do currently. There isn't a PG on the roster next year and it has to be addressed now, no matter who is in charge “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Billy G UpdateIf Gillespie were brought here, there would need to be a signed contract at the outset. He is famous for working without a contract, using the employer as a stepping stone, and then bolting for more money. Maybe a "no-bolting" clause of some sort. We need a coach that will be here for the long haul. Also, stipulations that speak to severe monetary penalties should there be any incidents involving intoxications. If he really wants the job, he'll sign it. If the fool had stayed at UTEP, they would be beating Kentucky today like they did in 1966. However, I have been told by more than one person (including at least one very experienced, successful and well regarded high school coach from this area) has told me that Doherty has had trouble recruiting blue-chippers because they are not able to meet the scholastic requirements for SMU. If that is true, I can't see where Doh is necessarily at fault for the state of the program.
Re: Billy G Update
really torn on Amaker as he imploded at Michigan. OTOH, he's recruiting very well at Harvard, very well. Last I heard, there were some rumblings around him about multiple secondary violations, but that was a while back. I think people need to be very cautious of the Coach K tree, as it hasn't yielded much high end coaching talent. Certainly, Dawkins will have a chance to right that at Stanford, but the rest of his assistants haven't proven particularly successful as head men. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building.
