Not true. The person(s) about whom the story is written -- based on information gleaned from the aforementioned "anonymous source" -- can file a suit, which might cause a judge to demand that the paper/writer identify his/her sources. Just ask the good folks at the NYTimes. One of their reports recently spent time in jail because she was ordered by a judge to divulge her sources. She refused, citing the need to keep that source anonymous in order to ensure future information. Judge accepted that reasoning, but put her in jail.

Why even print that nonsense? Let's get it out there - I can hear the Sports Editor - "we don't know anything but it doesn't matter....get something in print."

You would imagine it can't be anything that serious? How do you have recruiting violations when you suck as bad as we do....

Think about it from the Editor's perspective. SMU-NCAA Investigation. De Ja Vu all over again. Run with it. Get a deep throat inside the athletic department. Get out the parabolic mikes. Call in all your sources, this has to be news. Six weeks from now, the NCAA and SMU will release a joint statement saying that an alum ran into a recruiting prospect at a Jack in the Box and bought him a taco and a coke.

the fact that SMU is investigating apparent NCAA violations and has in fact reported possible NCAA violations to the NCAA is NEWS.. Geez. SMU -nobody else- is the one who hasn't reported what those violations are. I have no problem with them conducting an initial internal investigation but it certainly isn't the DMN who is to blame.

Exactly. We report EVERYTHING. SMU is beyond doubt the cleanest program in NCAA and follows the regs to a T. Part of those regs are self reporting even the tiniest of potential infractions. Not saying that's good or bad.

Maybe they are investigating why we are so terrible and play with a lack of heart. I can tollerate seeing us lose- I still go to games. But I cannot tollerate watching our team give up and roll over for every nobody that comesn through Moody. We saw it at the end of Dement's last season. We saw it some last season and it is certainly here again this season. I am tired of watching quitters.

Amazing. We're looking to see IF we're cheating, and it's reported in the DMN. Yet there's nothing anywhere about anyone, including the NCAA, investigating why Baylor is suddenly viewed as a viable destination for basketball recruits. Stunning.
