for about the fifth time, in the original quote I stated i was only half-serious. Pretty much indicates tongue-in-cheek dont you think?
BTW Tony Benford is a former TT Basketball player with extensive ties to Texas recruiting as well. He would be a top notch nationally respected assistant. That would be a pretty great second man. Benford played at the Top BB school in New Mexico too-Hobbs.
The DMN doesn't care about the info, nor do they want it. Honestly, what would they do with it? I'll believe we've got him when I see it stated in one sentence in the Star-Telegram Sports (page 16) under "College Briefs". Hmmmmmm
This is an excellent point.
I have been reading up on Evans, Benford and O'Dowd and if true, considering where we have been, I think we are coming out very good in this deal.
This in no way is intended to be disrespectful to Coach Tubbs or down play the manner in which it was handled, but rather to possibly see an upside to a new AD who can get some things done quickly with the cooperation of the President (Turner not Bush). Half of me is still shaking my head over the strange way this firing was handled but the other half is excited with the prospects of a revitalized BB program that I think could actually hit the ground running forward rather than having to take 3 steps backwards again. Time will answer many questions.
At the end of the day, Evans may end up getting the job, but when was the last time SMU moved this fast. Impossible. This hire will be made by Orsini and I hardly think he's going to rubber stamp Evans this quick. He'll at least want to do his due diligence and meet with a few other candidates before the deal gets done. I also hardly think that Turner is going to force his new AD (who has yet to fully takeover the job) to accept his candidate. If you were Orsini you would say if this is how it's going to be, I'm outta here.
1. Watkins wants this story. He also wants the story about more violations, too. And as I have said 100 times, he reads this board. So, Hi Calvin!
2. I can make an argument that the news will come out before the DMN gets it. It goes like this: Copeland isn't involved and there is no committee. That means fewer sources for leaks within SMU. The only two sources for good information are Turner (who has a full plate) and Orsini (who is, by and large, in Florida). Somebody with close ties to Evans or Orsini could get the story first. Doesn't mean they will.
I have kind of the opposite opinion than you Bigeasy. I think this smells of Orsini. Sure Turner has close ties to Evans, but Evans is not an unknown. Orsini has been on this for a while, perhaps even before the Tubbs firing. Maybe I am just looking for a positive spin to put on all the negative that has happened but I think a quick Evans hire will deflect some of the negativity that has been flying around, and from what I have read on the other 2, this is a package made for SMU in its current condition.
Is it good to have suffered as a University and for Coach Tubbs to have suffered as a person, no. But if we come out of this cluster F with Evans, and the other 2 I will be as pleased as can be possible under the circumstances.
We'll all best be served if there is a formal process that results in a qualified candidate. Since this is Orsini's first hire he'll take his time on it because he's going to be the one to live with it. I doubt seriously that Orsini wants to hire anyone without a proper vetting. Orsini is going to call the shots and I think he'll hire a qualified candidate.
My hunch is Evans may be a little older than what Orsini is looking for, but we'll find out b/c this hire and this process will begin to define Orsini. Given that I wouldn't expect a quick trigger.
Well, I don't know that age is an issue. He did hire O'Leary to coach at UCF when O'Leary was 57 and O'Leary was not exactly a spring chicken. Also, Rob Evans looks to be 59 and not 61 as some are reporting. This article, written 2 years ago, lists him as 57. http://www.azcentral.com/specials/special42/articles/0509asuathletics0509.html
