Nice home opening win for the Ponies. UGLY, but nice. 4-1 doesn't feel too bad. Rich Phillips was right: no way last year's team goes without a field goal in the last 6 mins. in a game like this and wins.
I like getting two wins in one day. Gets me in a good mood for the bars.
I like how we won even though we made 11 freakin field goals. You could tell that Dayton saw video of our last few games when we tried to establish the post. They were pushing us off the blocks the entire game and not letting us establish position, we need to work on that. #NewLobCity
Oh please, nice potshot. It was an ok win, but Dayton is obviously not very good. they shoot worse than we do. by the way, SMU set an all time record for fewest made field goals in game tonight. decent crowd and our guys played hard. seems like Dohery will have a honeymoon, which every coach deserves.
Ugly basketball looks pretty when you win.....Dayton put on a clinic on how to box out on rebounds. They made us look silly. Doherty ought to show this game film to the guys all season long to remind them how a good team does it.
Can we please learn how to run a fastbreak??????
I think you're flat out wrong. When your program has been as diseased as our in recent years, you have to build a culture of winning and the mindset to win. Winning games like this helps. We were horrible offensively. But I have said this before, when you play defense every game, you're always going to give yourselves a chance to win. And we did that. SMU 53, Dayton 48 Now, if you'd like to give the win back to Dayton, that's up to you. I think Matt Doherty will take it. Indeed, this is a honeymoon. But there is a better atmosphere here than in years past.
Wow...HUGE WIN...
We can't score worth a nickel, but we can DEFINITELY defend!!! GO PONIES!!!
it's really sad when an announced crowd of 2700 is referred to as a decent crowd. This program has a long ways to go, but hopefully is headed in the right direction
9-10 on free throws down the stretch
http://smumustangs.cstv.com/sports/m-ba ... 06aaa.html Mustangs Get It done at Moody UNIVERSITY PARK – During halftime of Saturday night's game against Dayton, SMU coach Matt Doherty told his players a story about one of the less-glamorous contests he played in at North Carolina. The Tar Heels managed just single digits in points in the first half against LSU but rallied for a victory on a day when both teams scored in the 40s. "There's just going to be games like this," Doherty said. .... "To gut it out showed a lot of character of our team," he said. Doherty blamed himself for SMU playing tight. "I want our fans to see what Mustang basketball's going to look like now. I wanted us to perform well so our fans would get excited and they'd tell other people," Doherty said. "I wanted it too much. I need to let our guys play." ..... http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent ... 505e6.html On the Sagarin rankings before the game, Dayton was rated 7 spots or so higher than SMU in the national rankings
"It's a great day to be a Mustang fan."
Fans can't get too excited watching that, but I'll take the Win. That was a snooze fest with a lot of whistles. Doherty said something about "when we get it inside" but that happened maybe twice tonight - we couldn't penetrate their defense at all or get boards.
exactly, the two major shortcomings this team had in recent years, rebounding and shooting, were on major display last night. we lose that game if it was played at Dayton. by the way, one of the guys killing us on the boards was a true freshman. alot of it is inate though. that kid had instincts along with great effort. Rack is a step slow and not an instinctive rebounder, even though he looks like he oughta be a glass eater.
