Something is rotten in Denmark when Billy Joe's calling Stallion a sunshiner. Somebody get him a membership application for the Eeyore Club.

Billy Joe wrote:Expect the ususal out of SMU basketball: 1) a losing conference record, 2) no post season tournaments (NIT or NCAA), and 3) excuses that the team is young, etc. I am tired of this program. SMU is right in the middle of some of the best basketball players in the entire country and SMU cannot even get a look from most of them. It is a big problem you 'sun shiners' on this board will not accept. I am impressed, though, SMU built the new basketball facility and you would think it would help keep the local talent at home and start building enthusisasm from the locals. Doh gets 2 more years and Orsini will have no choice but to show him the door and make excuses on why SMU basketball cannot even break the 'top 100' much less the so-called 'top 25' standard he set when he was hired. If anyone has any comments or insight on what Doh and Orsini have said about this program I am all ears. But I have seen no improvement or progress since Dement left.

Ok, thanks.

Be sure and thank the DISD's own henchman Goree Johnson for helping to light the match and provide the gasoline.

I miss that pipeline, so many great championships were brought here
over the last 15 or so years before we burned those bridges.....oh wait.

Billy Joe thought a practice facility would get DFW recruits...lol.

Do you have any idea the way SMU is perceived in local AAU circles?

I thought we would have more local kids with other Big 12 type offers by building top notch facilities. There are a lot of DFW and Texas kids that are not even looking our way. I have no idea how SMU is perceived in AAU circles but it cannot be great. I would like for someone to tell me how SMU is perceived in AAU circles and explain why SMU has such a negative image. Is it mostly related to how SMU treated Tubbs? Burgers and Cheer? Again, I want SMU basketball to be a winner but am really frusterated with the lack of improvement since Dement was fired.

Actually, they used to be pretty solid. Guy's slid off the deep end.

Actually the general's initial post is right on--who knows what Doherty's going to run out there this year. Should be fun to watch.

several new faces...some guys who have showed some promise coming back (hopefully improved their skills from last year) and a couple RS guys who have least been "in the system". Why not be optimistic for improvement?

As for recruiting with the big boys...gotta crawl before you can walk...much less run. Let's see if we can put some butts in the seats at Moody and win some games. 1st goal should be to make Moody a tough place for visitors to play...and an environment that might actually impress recruits.

I remember the exact date I was last called a Cheerleader. It was November 24, 1979 after a particularly miserable 31-7 loss to Arkansas to end the 1979 season. Mike Ford had gotten hurt, Dickerson disappeared in the 2nd half of the season and many thought he would transfer. I remember getting into a heated discussion with fraternity brothers and pointed out that SMU's freshman class was so loaded that it was inevitable that class would compete for Conference Championships.

The next 5 years we had the best record in the NCAA for the 5 year period. Give me a couple of great recruiting classes and I guarantee you I will be a cheerleader before they prove it.

Stallions, I know what you mean. I myself had a pretty good run of predictions that was scoffed at by my peers - I remember my buddies doubting me when I said Doak would come to the Hilltop rather than going to UT with Layne. I also told 'em, he would win the Heisman and a couple of conference championships before he was done at SMU. I can't believe the fools doubted me. But where are they now?

Doherty's stated goal is to take this team from 10-20 and finish 20-10 this year? If you are going to make that the goal, let's hope we get more than 30 games (more than a 1st round CUSA Tourney loss with no post season)

I'm having trouble finding more than 10-12 wins on this year's schedule...unless these guys are MUCH improved from last year.

With 17 games at Moody, we better be tough to beat on the home court!

IF McCoy and/or Williams aren't good enough to wrangle the starting PG from Mike Walker, we've got problems. That's my first concern.
I too would be very concerned if Mike Walker is our starting PG if he plays anywhere close to how he did last season. I'm really hoping that Williams will be a big upgrade for us in ballhandling and penetration.
This paragraph is from the DMN preview published yesterday:
"The Mustangs will feature two point guards on the court at once, with returning sophomore Mike Walker, freshman Paul McCoy and junior college transfer Derek Williams expected to share the duties. "
