True about your last sentence but Gillispie has proven that he can build a program, take a loser to a winner and do it quick -- at Texas A&M and UTEP -- and recruit the hell out of Dallas and the state of Texas in the process. Doh hasn't proven that.

I'd rather have a coach that can build a program and win at this level than a guy who is good at blogging and PR. The PR stuff wears out when you don't put a winning product on the floor -- think that is becoming the case with Doh.

Regardless, Doh isn't getting replaced this offseason and while Gillespie may get canned, SMU isn't going to hire him.

Go back and take a closer look at how he recruited while he was at UTEP. No arguing the guy has a better resume, but he ain't looking at a WWJD bracelet to get him there.

Is that going to be our criteria "looking at a wwjd bracelet", when we are looking for a new coach. Hell, I thought the criteria was going to be able to win more than 10 games.

I honestly don't think having the coach be crucified would be beneficial to the basketball program.

Plus, I don't think Jesus knew much, if anything, about basketball.

That is a good point, ASDF. I'd rather have a guy that can win games and drinks a few beers every now and then and chases some tail, than a guy who doesn't win games and lives the 'wwjd' mantra.

LOL at some of the naive fellas here.

Oh jesus christ it's a funny way of saying the guy is a complete [deleted] slimeball, that didn't play by the rules. You all need to lighten the [deleted] up, seriously and learn to get a sense of humor.

I dont think there is a need to worry about the buyout. The only way us or anyone else would be interested is if he were already let go by Kentucky, which sounds like is a good possibility. Kentucky is not for everyone and it doesnt look like its going to work out.

Billy Clyde is a heck of a coach and we would be lucky to get him. Although we have been hearing Doh is safe, if someone like Billy Clyde became available I think Orsini would take a hard look at it and Doh could be out.

hockeyguy, I got that it was not a literal post about "the wwjd bracelet," so I will reiterate my post. Is not being "a [deleted] slimeball" rule him out as a potential candidate in this far flung, two current coaches being fired, ridiculous hypothetical situation?

LOL!!! Good one, buddy.

Good post as well, ASDF.

You are going to have an incredibly small pool of candidates if you are hiring a college hoops coach and you don't include '[deleted], slimeball' candidates. Funny that 'didn't play by the rules' Gillespie has never been in trouble with the NCAA.

College hoops is a shady business.

Just because someone wasn't slammed for doing something two coaching stops ago doesn't mean it didn't happen. And that characterization of Gillipsie is shared by people that know a hell of a lot more than me, and you, about college basketball. What's naive is for you to think that it's having a few beers and chasing a couple girls. What's also naive is for you to think that I would make such an asinine comment and actually think we should hire someone because of that. Get a sense of humor.

Of course this isn't to take away from the fact that he was highly successful at his two previous stops, and has demonstrated the ability to turn around two basketball programs. Even in the hypothetical-never-gonna-happen Gillipsie/Doherty fired at the same time, he would likely not be a good fit at this institution here, if he would even take the job.

He would have a few beers with the great Don Haskins after his games at UTEP, and he got a DWI while driving back to his house. His mistake was the DWI, but there was nothing wrong with have a few drinks with Haskins

If you think that the Methodist Church appointed trustees on the Board don't look at character issues in the coaches that we hire, you might want to think again. After we got the death penalty and the Methodist Church kicked out the Board of Governors, they made it very clear that they would look to see if the coaches at least paid lip service to the folks with "WWJD Bracelets". My main concern would be that he would be looking for his next job from the first day he arrived here. UTEP, A&M and Arkansas sure know what I mean about that. Great coach, but loyalty is not in his nature. Then when you add in the skirt chasing, it makes it a harder sell to this University's trustees. And I don't think the folks here will want to pay June Jones money for the basketball coach.

Can we fire Doherty now and hire him? Our coach wins 10 games then 9 games and keeps his job. This coach goes to the NIT and gets fired. SMU is still a minor league institution trying to play with the big boys. I guess that is why most people quit going to the basketball games.
