Re: JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKETDoherty needs to get canned. Hire a coach who can immediately bring on board 4/5 star recruits from the Dallas area - problem solved.
Re: JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKETI'm so confused... why does it matter if the DISD coaches hate SMU? I thought it was about AAU coaches??
Re: JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKET
People forget that players are individuals with their own opinions and goals. By continuing to claim that "DISD hates SMU" they can generalize in a way that explains SMU's poor recruiting in Dallas. Far East Conference
Re: JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKET
well, for one thing, the whole damn argument is flawed. No coach can 'deliver' a freakin kid to anybody. Coaches, the good ones, can advise, mentor, suggest, etc. you get the point. In the end its gonna take the right kid and the right fit to choose SMU at a moment in time. Concluding the DISD coaches didn't deliver us any players in the whopping two years tubbs was coach is and always was absurd. All Tubbs or anybody else gives SMU is an open door and a chance locally. The Sassers, Ross's, Hanco-cks, Hopkins still have to walk through that door. Sometimes the door has to remain open for a bit of time before the saviors come walking through and circumstances to align (such as BHop having a twin bro and mama wanting them to be near home). Tubbs was here for a while as an assistant before we got Sasser too. He finally had some success a year or two after Dement came in and made local recruiting a true priority. Doh cant snap his fingers and get locals either, but i dont see that he has opened the door either, or done things to thaw the ice. Invest a scholly in a 2 or low 3 star local who you like from a power program. Dont expect 4 stars to blaze the way to smu, it will most likely be the other way around.
Re: JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKETLet's cut out the [deleted] argument that local coaches "wronged" Tubbs. What a pile of [deleted]. High school Coaches don't get to decide where players go. The bottom line responsibility is for the University to provide a Coach with a Model in which he can suceed and for the Head Coach and his staff to get the job done. Both SMU and Tubbs and staff are the responsible parties to lay criticism at. In fact, Tubbs did get looks at some of the top players in the Metroplex as a head coach-he just didn't get the job done during his tenure although his record during his entire career is the best we've ever done in the Metroplex except maybe when we signed Ira Terrell and then Sammy Hervey. If you blame Metroplex coaches for SMU's problems during Tubbs tenure you don't understand recruiting. Truly misdirected blame.

When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
Re: JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKETSMU can't recruit quality talent locally due to X. Sounds a lot like football pre-June. Smu can't recruit from Y school because we wronged them. Sounds like when June pulled that Bennett offer.
All BS excuses. "I think Couchem is right."

Re: JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKET
I totally diagree with you and I fully understand recruiting. Coaches have a considerable impact on the dirction in which a recruit gets pointed and the directions they are encouraged to pursue. Most coaches are very influential and act as mentors for the kids in assessing colleges, program philosophies, styles of play, coaching styles.....etc. Coaches are relied upon by the kids to answer their questions and resolve their concerns. Coaches can steer kids to be receptive and open minded to programs as well as steer them away. It is totally human nature to act in this way when you are trying to help a kid and seek to act in his/her best interest. Obviously, the recruiter and program takes over and the kid makes his own decision. But it is ludicrous to imply that the HS or AAU coach does not have a major and highly influential impact on directing a kid to a program they believe will serve the kid's best interest.
Re: JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKET
The DISD coaches cannot deliver players but, they can influence kids to not consider us.........
Re: JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKETpoconopony is the closest to being accurate in this thread. One of the biggest mistakes is everyone taking our local recruiting issues and improperly placing them at the feet of the Tubbs fiasco. Local hate runs far deeper then all of that. That was the cherry on top.
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKETponydoh, no one is confused about that, the history is long and the 'distaste' runs deep. But Doherty has proven he is not a bridge to improving the local relations, nor has he gotten it done elsewhere, or on the court. So what do you have? 3 problems made worse than when you started. I guarantee when they hired Doh they knew we would get killed locally, but they didn't care, because someone thought Doh would win big and it wouldn't matter in the end. How'd that work out for us? If you were issuing Orsini a basketball grade overall: F-
Re: JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKETI know, let's get one of the top DISD kids from in a single recruiting class...say, a 5 star, that's right,
F I V E f ing star point guard, and then everything will be just fine. Whaddya say? Oh wait. We already did that. And two coaches got ran while the dude was here. Sounds to me like it's coaching, not players. Or more coaching than it is players. Guess there is no pied piper recruit in bball.
Re: JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKETJean-Jacques, a DISD product, conveniently ignores what a cesspool DISD basketball is. Jacques is either blindly ignorant to what's going on in the DISD, or he's telling SMU it needs to start buying players again.
If we start signing a lot of 4- and 5-star DISD recruits, you can be sure an NCAA investigation won't be far behind.
Re: JEAN-JACQUES JUST KILLED DOH/SMU ON THE TICKET
local bridges are being repaired by the new staff, it's just not a quick fix. Assistant turnover is what has ailed this program. Who to blame that on is anyones guess. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run.
