the level of competition the 99-00 team was playing was far above what this team is playing. When we lost that crucial game to Tulsa at home, they were ranked like #15 in the country as someone else pointed out and they were legit. It was great to win at Houston the other night, but that is a bad Houston team at 4-7 in CUSA. Don't think James Dickey was a good hire for them at all, I would take Doh over him all day long. The intensity of the games we are playing doesn't even come close to the old games against Tulsa, TCU, Fresno and UNLV before that. We were dealt a very favorable CUSA schedule this year and we have a veteran club. Still, after the dreadful non-conference showing, it is great to have a semi-meaningful game at home in February. Win today, and it could get very interesting down the stretch. Can't lose it though, otherwise we are firmly middle of the pack in the league.

SMU's academic policies kept that team out of the NCAA Tournament. Willie Davis' mistake was to drive fullcourt to the basket when he should have held the ball with only seconds remaining-he never got a shot off as I remember because it skipped off his knee and went out of bounds. At this point in the season the Sasser/Davis team was at No. 39 in RBI-approximately 150 teams higher than this one. But again if SMU's own academic policies hadn't prevented Dement from finding that missing piece inside that was blatently obvious-they likely would have gone to the NCAA's

Yes, that is obvious. They could have filled in the pieces well. Instead we had some really big and slow white guys.

I loved everything about the Wac 16 in hoops. It was a very tough league and we had nice developing hoops rivalries. Certainly, the 99'-00 team was more talented, but they really didn't get as much out of it as they should. There is no doubt that team ran a tougher schedule. I disagree about today's game, however. It's not make or break at all. This has been about a progression in system. Something we needed to see, if we were to believe in this direction moving forward. We've seen that, these games are good times, good fun, a reason to drink good beer, and get fired up as an SMU basketball fan. I'll stress all this when we're expected to do something. This year is about the ride and it's fun

I miss the WAC and those games against Utah and New Mexico. I'm pretty sure that the 99-00 team was just on the outside of the rankings at a couple points in that season. I remember looking at the newspaper and seeing SMU being in the top 5 of vote-getters after the top 25. And then it fell apart.

Jury is out on this team until the end of the season when the whole body of work can be assessed. If this team is the best team since 93 we should give up basketball and restore baseball.

i dont think it was a must win in terms of Doherty getting fired or anything now, but it was a must win in the sense of staying in the race and potentially having a special season. We pretty much locked up 6th place today because Tulsa has an easy schedule the rest of the way. It hurts to lose winnable games at home when they count. Tulsa was beatable today, Hurtt did not play well. We are gonna have a tough time beating them the next few years too with the good young players Tulsa has and with experience now.

We'll see about Tulsa in a few years, but I love Clarkson and wished we could have closed on him. This year is already special, I'm not caught up in the league rankings cause I'm still amazed this roster is competing at this level. Next year when we have some horses/expectations, and probably less chemistry, I'll wear my frustration on my sleeve, I'm sure. This year is gravy. That said, would have loved a win today. Need a few kids that can create off the bounce when other teams actually defend

its sort of amazing that Papa has not gotten into more foul trouble this year as many minutes as he plays. Today showed i think how much we are really gonna miss Papa next year. Even if Vilde, a true 4, can defend the post as a freshman and not get into foul trouble, we have nobody else to spell him. If there is truly an NCAA tournament in Doherty's future, I really think he better get a promising true post man in here quick.

I don't think the princeton is really predicated on having a dominant low post 5. IF anything, we've sorta adapted it to accommodate Dia. Vilde can definitely run the 5 in the princeton, and Nyakundi has the 4. Smith/Cunningham/Norman give you 3 other 6'7+ kids w/skill and some size. All better than what we're backing up w/now.

I agree that we could use another marquee big, if only b/c I think Smith is shrinking, and Cunningham will take a minute to adjust. We have a few kids that can board next year, so it's not all on one guy like this year. We're just stop-gap everywhere this year, and doing pretty darn well considering. I'd bet we're after a kid like Zach Leday at Skyline as another long 3/4 or 4/3 type
