I was there, and you're right -- losing to NTSU sucks.
Here's what I saw:
-- North Texas State is a much better team than the bunch we beat last year. I don't know how many new players they have, because ... well, because I don't care. But they hustled and they had 2 or 3 kids who can really score. Their point guard punted in a couple of 3s from somewhere near Corinth (it's outside of Denton).
-- The officials absolutely sucked. I don't know that they decided the outcome of the game, but I don't know that they didn't. On one trip down the floor, someone could get mugged and no call was made. The next time down, the same player could have someone glance in her direction and get the whistle. Happened on both ends. I don't know how either team's coaches could tell their teams how to play.
-- We looked a little sloppy handling the ball. We have to get better beating pressure defense. When we were able to get passes halfway up the court, we beat it easily. Beating it with the dribble wasn't so easy.
-- Our outside shooting wasn't happening. I don't think we hit a 3 all night.
-- Filmore is really good. When we didn't have much going offensively, she got in the lane and hit shots or drew fouls ... or both.
We didn't play well and still almost won. I was disappointed, but encouraged considering this year seems like it might be something of a rebuild. We'll have ups and downs, but we should be OK. Tonight was the first time I saw us play, but I will be coming down to Dallas for some games.
